A&Q about 350Z
Q:
I have a quick question. If all of the downloaded pics I have of over 150 L28 engines, why are just about all of the cylinder heads never painted?
A:
Lots of reasons, but for function, you want that head to be Exothermic, therefore NO paint.
Lots of Z cars, 1970's-1983's.

Actually the stock setup had a slight clear lacquer coating on the head.
After that, most just let that Alumimum Oxide layer dull and stay away from it.
Short of Anodizing it black for better radiative properties (search the archives), leaving it bare is the best it will get.
Why would you paint it? Not like it's going to rust!

I have wanted to ask this question for sometime, but i felt it was a silly question. 1 fast Z, I understand what you are saying, but why on all of these car resto shows, the V8 guys always paint the heads? Hey P, how is the 240 project coming?
A:
that is because the mostly have cast iron heads ...
BTW an l28 witha painted head looks like a 66 Stang line six.. and that is not positive in my book!

To me after painting the engine bay and most of everything else inside of the engine bay, it just looks off not painting it.
A:
Aluminum. That says enough.
A:
if its going to be strictly a show that gets transported from place to place, then go ahead paint it. but if you plan on driving it around at all i wouldnt do it. No one is telling you not to, they are just saying it doesnt dissipate heat when its painted.

Norm said "Hey if you live in Alaska though it might be a great idea to paint it!!! haha" yeah hahahaha:-). No guys, I live in the deep south, no painting of the cylinder head for my next project:-) Thanks!!
A:
I painted mine with high temp spray can silver 6 or so years ago and have overheated the engine to over 250 degrees and it held up fine. Go to the website and look at the new engine pix. I only cleaned the head when I did it. I did not have to repaint it. Paul

There are some thermal coatings that will help shed heat as well, short of something like that...I wouldn't paint it.
