EL MIRAGE JULY 16th RUN PHOTO:
Compare from last posted image to see the difference between 141mph turbulence, and 77mph turbulence (this photo).
Had a sensor failure at the top of third gear and shut it down to coast through traps moving back in the run groups since the first run at this rate!
Blue, e-mail me. I am trying to digitize the in-car camera footage from the run for posting on the internet---you can host it if I can convert it with the audio. (Yeah, the car now has a Video Camera Mount installed!!!)
It's a short-shifted run, but you get to hear an L-Engine runing at 8000+ in Car. Sounds bitchen on the home entertainment system!
10 runs on the dyno clean and clear to 9500rpms, and a warmup on the starting line and through three gears and a sensor failure. Whatta beyotch!
EEH, that's racing. Bummer...

There was an "intermittent sensor failure" error logged on the TEC2.
I am thinking the verrrry short life of the sensors we have been having is a result of the sensor being so close to the open atmosphere and something is kicking up and contaminating it.
We tried disabling it and running on the predone map, but it wasn't running right, so short of a full datalog (maybe on the dyno) we won't know what the problem is if it's related to another sensor.
We didn't have a suitable way of securing the laptop into the car for a datalogged run, so we packed up for the day. We just got the camera mount Saturday before the meet (Thanks Autopower!) So that was CRUCIAL in us figuring out what was happening, we could run it back on the DVD player Aux Inputs in Dave's Truck (yeah, I know....) and we could clearly correlate the misfire and immediate swinging of the A/F Ratio monitor (separate sensor) swinging from "Green" to "Full Rich" which is a limphome sensor failure.
I am misunderstanding the TEC Software, as I thought on sensor failure you reverted to your hardmap. And our hardmap is showing zero lambda correction when running, so that would clearly mean the O2 sensor is not correcting anything, so it should run FINE with hte O2 disabled and running in Open Loop.
This is what makes me worry about another sensor failure. Nobody wants to lay under a car in 115 degree heat replacing sensors.
But when it was warming up, the sound of an L-Engine running open headers right off the collectors, 15.75:1 compression, and 105 octane unleaded race fuel at 9000rpms is not like anything else you might have heard before, unless an old 1966 F1 Ferrari V12 lost one bank of magnetos!

The car is and always was owned by Andy Flagg---it's his name on the California Title.
Too bad it wasn't built on my 75 2+2 Chassis, then it would be smog exempt, and I could claim it as the fastest STREET LEGAL 280Z 2+2!
Muahahaha.
If this one wrecks, that is what will happen, btw, I got the chassis sitting out back just in case. Like Andy said: "If Dave wrecks it, that will make a handy replacement chassis!"
Indeed.

3" wide on the front, 5" wide on the back 15" Centerline Convo Pros, watch the runout closely.
The Moon Discs are secured using three sheetmetal screws through the rim into the tire's bead area. You can affix them using Dzus Fasteners, but having the proper mating tabs and springs welded to the rim and then rebalanced is a real PITA.

That air really cuts sharply off the rear even at the lower speed, it's like your bumper is being sand blasted! With that and the air underneath I can see how the back gets light.
Are you using an Autopower roll cage? Which one?
Matt
A:
We made the cage ourself, but Autopower does a lot of work with other teams up at the flats---they have kits that fit pretty well.
Chances are I will use one of their cages as a base for the 280ZXT.
Then again, a Tubeshark is only $3400....

I'm thinking the rear anti-roll bar mouns need to go away, the fuel tank might want to tuck up a little higher, and it looks like you could lose about 1.5" of ride height. Can the windshield clips be "full width" across the top of the windshield?
- John
A:
Well, the mounts have to stay according to the rules. The tank might get up higher, but it's strapped in tight up against it's mounts, I don't know why it's looking so low. I was the one holding it up there the night before the race (sans Gravel Ballast)---we remove the tank when the belly pan is on.
With the belly pan on, there is only about 1" of ground clearance, and the coilovers have had four years of Bonneville NaCl exposure....someone should have greased em up before going to Benneville some years ago, otherwise yeah, maybe with the pan off we could probably drop 1/2 or 3/4" more. I can not fit my wrist, SIDEWAYS (thinways) under the front chassis rail when it's level on the ground with the suspension settled to stuff the rags in the collectors, so if there is any suspension compliance it might hit, and we definately do not want a hard contact with the track surface to lift the front end.
Traditionally they want them to come down across the window top to bottom, I'll have to talk with Dan Warner to see his take on the rule. There is a catchall phrase in production class that disallows safety items from being streamlined. The Sundowner Corvette runs over 200# of lead hanging from his front bumper, and the rules specifically state the ballast can not be streamlined. But they didn't say he couldn't mount the stock license plate up front. Just because it collapses back about 180mph and makes a wedge front end from the ballast....well the ballast isn't stramlined, and the plate is representative of any vehicle available to the general public off any dealer's lot, 500 examples of which were produced in any given year so that kinda nipped that one! LOL
I wish the S20 was legal for our class. The Lucas Slide Valve Equipped S20's have about 140 more HP than we have now, at 10,500! That would really bump the standard for a 2-Liter Group!
Oh, BTW, thanks for the lead on the Dyno Shop John. Chris over there has been great! We are thinking of upgrading the ECU now as the higher RPM operation seems to be playing tricks on the "little" wheel in the Distributor. E-Motive said it wasn't suitable for operation above 8500 (due to resolution and processor speed) and they're right. Looks like it works one time, and then craps out another. BAH! It's only Money, right?

The fuel tank could always be sectioned an inch with the straps shortened accordingly. At the rpms you guys are running you probably have to run a crank trigger. There's a lot of wind up and strange vibration in the distributor drive mechanism above 8,500 rpm. A lot of that comes from the oil pump trying to move a fluid while dealing with cavitation inside the pump itself. I've seen a pump that had little pockets worn in the metal from collapsing air bubbles.
Good luck with the car! Let me know the next time you're heading out. If I"m free I might come and help.
- John

Sectioning the gas tank would not be legal!
On that note, there was a guy who had a problem with his bike last month. Simply moved his sticker over to his girlfriend's bike made a run with that, and broke the record.
They found in tech that it was a different bike.
Banned for a year.
Lost all points, as well as having all points accumulated for his respective club pulled.
Moved his club from first place in overall points standings, to third.
These are grumpy, P.O. old men (older than me, by a long shot!), that have armaments. I don't want them P.O. at ME!
While tech to get onto the lake is fairly easy (especially if you are a current competitor), tech after a record is something else entirely! Akin to an anal audit. Classification paperwork checks, three or four inspectors on the car telling you what they want removed to inspect.
Oh yeah, and having the wonderful opportunity to pull rocker arms on a fully hot engine (less than 30 minutes to get to impound after a record setting run!)
Next Meet is September 10th. We usually are up there Saturday afternoon for Tech, and then sleep on the lakebed because non-glass containers contain things not conducive to driving back down the Cajon Pass after dark..... Tech and Registration Trailer opens at 7AM, Driver's meeting is around 730 to 8, and first car out is usually very shortly thereafter. If they are really hopping the first car has been known to go before 745!
We were #48 in the run group (from 37, from 218), if we don't get a pass within 3% of the record soon we will be back with "the common folk"! LOL
Lots of big dollar teams up there this month, getting ready for Bonneville in August. September is usually another good meet with people off from Bonneville and getting ready for World of Speed that next weekend.
October is just before World Finals at Bonneville, and then November is a two day event, so we're up on the lake Friday night.
Come along, we have meat, cheese, and beer.

Meat, cheese, beer, and fast loud cars.....it doesn't get any better than that.
If I were within a coupla hundred miles, I might show up, but currently closer to 2000 miles and not doable.
Is it possible to tape off body seams, trim, and open ducts for better aerodynamics, or is that limited as well?
A:
Taping seams is SPECIFICALLY prohibited!
"Production" means "Production!"
This is what drew me to this form of racing; first, it was displacement stratified, so simply putting the biggest engine in that you could didn't necessarily mean you will win; and second, the car in production trim is basically the same thing you buy at the dealer. Bumpers, door panels, dashboard. Basically put a hot engine in it and see how fast it will go.
If you do aero mods, you go into another class, and trust me, speeds vary dramatically between Production and Altered classes.
Why not Maxton NC (NORM!)? It's closer to the Mideast. I know I can be on the course at Maxton form waaay up at the cottage in Michigan in less than 12 hours drive.
Hell, when I was at Maxton last month, there was a team that drove in from Louisiana. Like the guy cutting a bolt in the vice said: "Nice little drive, only 850 miles one-way!"
THAT is dedication to racing!
I love it when guys whine that the nearest track is 4 hours away....

I wish the SCTA would adopt the "Street Class" rules for the classes that the ECTA Runs, but they are on pavement and we are on dirt, so it's not exactly like running fast on the highway out here.
But Norm, remember you pays youre money, you run balls out for one run, and if you break or set a record, they can't take it from you---you get your name in the record books, and a stern talking to about not returning till you have proper safety prep on the car.
It would be good to see how fast a "Hot N/A L28 Production Street Z Running 12's" would REALLY go when timed in a static environment!
I'm sure a lot of people would be suprised at the results.

Norm, you disapoint me!
The only thing that helps aerodynamics on the front of a Z-Car is a G-Nose. A spolier will not help with the CD, and will add frontal area making it harder for top speed runs.
Slick, slippery, and screaming...that's what you want.
Spoliers are fine for stability, but for top speed adding weight is more effective.
