A&Q about 350Z
Q:
Just recently lost out on an auction for a 510 because the seller sold it outside of eBay. I constantly see it "this auction is over because the item listed is no longer available." Is it just me, or does this just seem wrong. If you open an auction on ebay you should be committed to the transaction for the length of the auction. I mean, if I win I can't say "I can't pay for this item because my money is no longer available", or "my interest in the item is no longer available." Just a rant.

That's sh***y. Post some negative feedback

my neighbor has a 4 door 510 hes getting rid of cheap i heard rumor of. its been sitting for 30 years and actually looks pretty decent. too bad its a 4 door or id snap it up.
A:
Usually, if you look into the wording they say that the item is for sale outside of Ebay and whoever makes the best offer first gets the car.
Check the wording before you give negative feedback. Its not like you lost any money.
A:
I don't believe you can give feedback one way or the other unless you're the buyer or seller. I agree that its a pisser when auction stuff all of a sudden disappears from eBay because its sold locally. At least most people put the 'may sell locally warning'. Anyway, there's no way to stop it. If eBay 'required' you to tough out a whole auction cycle, people would either not put the auctions up in the first place or just ignore the rule.

I have no intention of leaving feedback and can't anyway because the auction ended early, it just pisses me off. If you go to a real auction and are bidding on something the owner can't just stop the auction because some outside party wants to buy it, you have to bid and win. Ebay shouldn't be used for just advertising. If you have an amount in mind that is acceptable to you, set your reserve accordingly or set a buy-it-now option. And yes, this auction did have the type of disclaimer that JR mentions, but just use AutoTrader or something if you are only looking to get exposure for your automobile.
A:
Yeah', like said above. Usually something is written in the auction wording saying the auction may end without a bidder winning. Like I usually put "I the seller can back out of the auction for any reason", then say that I probably wont unless car sells locally ect ect... For cars, this is understandable. But frustrating when you are the bidder. If the seller closes the auction before ending, that is the correct way to do it, and you cannot leave negative feedback. But if he let the auction end, and you won it. That is wrong and you can leave negative feedback.
A:
That's why ebay charges you $40 for the Ad and then another $40 the minute the first bid is placed. That way they get thier money if you try to game the system.
I tell ya what sucks on ebay's part is that you DO NOT get your money back from ebay if the buyer backs out on buying the car.
You cannot get a relist credit when selling a complete car.
The guy had his disclaimer in the Ad. If you see it again instead of bidding just email the guy directly and say "Hey dude, what's it gonna take to end this auction NOW and sell it directly to me."
Better luck next time.
Later,Norm

There is a 510 that looks race preped for sale down the street from me. It is a two door. If you like I will inquire about it. I am in Tulsa, Oklahoma if that helps.

Thanks, but Oklahoma is a little far for me. I'm in Vegas and the car I was looking at was in Cali, which is about as far as I want to go.

I sell thousands of dollars of things on ebay...I always know if I have somethin real good cause I get emails about what price I would take to stop the auction. You can pull the same trick if you see a car and the seller is willling to take an offer...a seller can stop an auction anytime they want..as long as they sell it to the present high bidder...now...that bidder may pay a lot more than what his high bid is when the auction closes...money talks....smart sellers never take an offer though...it is never what the item finally brings...I have found that if someone offers me 600 to stop an auction...then the item will probably bring 1200 to 2000..or more...

I just came back from two years in Vegas. Sorry I didn't get to hook up with you. I could have used a Z friend a couple of times. Oh well. Good luck.

Thanks for everyone's offers concerning cars they would sell me or that they know of, but this was more of an impulse thing than me actually actively looking for a 510. There was a time when you could actually find a diamond in the rough on ebay and get a good price on it, but those days are long gone. I need to concentrate my efforts on getting my jackstand racer on the road anyway. It's been up in the air gathering dust for too long. Anyone want to help me wire up megasquirt and spark in a turbo 260? I just moved to Vegas from Reno a couple months ago and left my car buddy behind, along with the kicks in the ass he would give me when I didn't work on my car.

Ebay is just like anywhere else for selling cars, most people will put an ad in the paper and one in a car sales magazine aswell as on the internet. Ebay is just another avenue of sale and if they state clearly on the auction that the item is listed somewhere else and the seller reserves the right to end the auction at any time, then this is perfectly legal.
Basically it's no different if someone where to sell a car in the newspaper but is still getting 10 calls a day from the ad in the magazine etc. What is he going to do? Not sell it someone who's interested with the cash in hand because he has advertisements elsewhere? A sale is a sale, if you missed out it's just bad luck more than anything.
