A&Q about 350Z
Q:
Does anybody know what type of fluid the power steering pump takes on an '02 Liberty?
Owner's Manual says to see the dealer and the dealer wanted over $90 to change the fluid.
Thanks for any help.

My 03 Liberty says to use approved power steering fluid. Go to the local parts store and see if the fluid is apporved by DC for use in their cars. It should say on the bottle.
If you are losing fluid, you have a leak that should be fixed anyway. I don't think I would go to the dealer for this, but a trusted garage would be advised. It's a waste to keep putting in fluid that will just leak out.
In the old days you could use ATF as power steering fluid, but not anymore. There are too many additives in the ATF we use today and the P/S systems are not designed for them.

Thanks for reminding me that the bottle should be marked for suitability in which manufacturer's vehicles.
Thanks for the advice, but there is no leak. Dealer suggested changing the fluid and I just thought that $90+ was a bit much given the work involved.

you can use almost anything, i use ATF and some times hydrolic fluid, as long as the fluid is dense and can somewhat lube, its fine.

Not sure why the Dealer would suggest changing P/S fluid? Other than he was looking for some quick $$$... Far as I know there's no way the fluid can get dirt or anything in it? I think my 1986 Chevy Silverado still has the original P/S fluid in there and it's working just fine with 189,000 miles on it...
Best of luck...

Yeah, I wouldn't mess with it if it's working fine. It's a closed system that should not get dirty unless there is a leak.

I appreciate the advice about not touching that which works, but it ain't my truck.
I think the fluid is fine, but the service rep said it was cloudy. Its easier for me to change the fluid than have TS ask me twice a week if I think its safe to drive the Liberty.
Thanks again for the help and comments.

Tom.........Service reps are paid to make money for the company. Next they will be telling you that the air in the tires need changing.
A:
Skipz,
That's never been a problem.
Of course, I change the tires' air and the muffler bearing with every oil change.
