A&Q about 350Z
Q:
The datsun is on hold for a while and the 91 mercury cougar with the 5.0 has got to be the worst car ive own. every 2 weeks theres a new problem. Anyways i have a chance to get a 87 5 speed 3.0v6 maxima se with about 170k miles on it for $85 (trading a gift card and a car stereo so the value will be $300) from what i understand its the same v6 from the first gen 300zx. How are those things long term wise because i know the L series in my z can go forever. anybody have any experience with the second gen maxima (84-88)?
it looks pretty clean the only mechanical thing it needs is rear shocks and the guy whos selling it to me is the one who owned my 280z for 17 years and technically bought the car back from me, is going to do all the work on it then i will buy it back next year for roughly $4k. as of now it has a nismo lsd, toyota nonvented brakes, all new shocks, hks bov, ALLLLLLL the rust propery repaird and all that good stuff.
Bottom line is the 87 maxima a good bet?

It's a VG, but there are internal differences like cams etc... Maximas are good for daily drvers and you wont have alot of problems with it aslong as all the worn bs (if any) is attended to asap.

Hey I'm getting a 90 maxima for 100.00 What a small world. I gonna be my daily to replace the Z. Hmm...mabye not. Hey I know where a 87' 300zx turbo is with a good motor, will the motors swap between the maxima and Z, Turbo, wiring/ecu and all? BTW sorry for the thread-jack.

man i had an 88 maxima with a 5 speed that car was bullet proof. i abused it daily for almost 3 years, when i say abused i mean it... talking constant clutch dumps, hole shots, tormenting ricers... she would lay 15 to 20 ft. twin black marks :) ran like a champ when i sold it too. the 5 speed makes it pretty peppy too. should have no problems walking on NA Eclipses and civics. I used mine as a tow truck, baja racer, street racer, beach machine, it was the best car i ever had, even better to me than my Z's. You should hop on that deal.

Internally, the engine is exactly the same as in the 300ZX. The difference in hp is attributable to the intake and exhaust plumbing.

Cams seem as if they're the same upon some further research, I had always thought they were different. There are more differences than just intake though:

YES! Grab it and enjoy it. I bought one from the same year and a 5 speed also. It was fully loaded with the adjustable suspension, it had everything! I loved that car just beware of electrial gremlins that may occur. Mine had 214,000 on it when I got rid of it because it had a huge short and melted most of the wiring harness under the hood.

Like all cars they have problems.
1. They use timing belts.
On the plus side our 87 had over 220k miles on the original timing belt I think.
2. Power steering seals tend to go bad.
3. Fuel injectors leak and cause engine fires.
4. Lucky to get over 20mpg.
Otherwise I never had a problem with it. Ac compressor still worked after 220k miles. We had to recharge it once.

5. Brakes will lock up easy.

They go well in the snow also. I always wanted to turbo mine somehow.

mine got about 28 mpg when i drove normal, yeah those brakes did lock up easy especially on wet roads, forgot about that. there is a recall to fix the leaky injector issue i had mine done.

I would be shocked if that were true! Not only that but if you knew it was original, why wouldn't you change it? If were to have snapped, you would have been screwed!

Can you really get 28mpg with a 87 maxima? I have a cutlass 3.1l that gets 30mpg and wouldnt much rather drive a maxima if it does get around there. Our old one got in the low 20's but we never changed the o2 sensor or temp sensor. My saturn went from 28mpg to 40mpg after changing those sensors.
I didnt know as much about cars then. We never did anything to it. It was reliable. Someone might have changed it before we bought it, but doubtfull.
edit: You had a 5 spd. That must be why.
