...or they thought you were driving a slick Datsun (the poor man's "Porsche" as it was and is affectionately known) and were simply waving because they wanted you to come buy a porsche.
Either way, great story.

"The poor man's Porsche" was the 914, the competition of the Z.
The Z was price competitive with the 914, but performance competitive with the upmarket 911.
That's the formula that made it so successful.
Track 911 and 240/60/80Z sales from 1970 to 1978...

Maybe they were just car guys? The simple explanation is usually right...
A:
Well...I have to say that I agree and disagree with you. From a purely technical perspective, and from my respect for your knowledge of cars, you are correct. the 914 was the "poor man's porsche".
However, several of my parents friends have commented on my Z, mentioning how "back in the day" their buddy's 240/260/280 was known as the "poor man's porsche". So I have conflicting sources...

They were simply TMR's stading around, and out of politeness waved.
Our TMR's in the warehouse seem to be a happy lot, though we had to train them not to mop the bathroom floors by using the commode water on the mops....
TMR: Trainable Mentally Retarded.
I mean, he did say it was a car dealership, I can assume used cars were being sold there as well....
The next jump in that simple logic train should be obvious!

A:
240-260-280Z sales 1970 - 1978 = 397,055 units.
Somebody else can collect the 911 sales figures.

Actually, a nice older Z gets a lot of respect and they were probably just admiring your Z as a Z. And I can't believe I got sucked into this thread. Just seems like everyone overlooked that people respond to older Z's with enthusiasm and everyone that comes in my computer store comments on my Z and how "a friend of mine used to have one in college" or "I had a Z and wish I'd never sold it". That kind of stuff. Datto, they were just saying, "Nice Z Dude!"

A:
924 also a poor mans Porsche (2L motor is a little small)
944 for the poor man who stumbled accross a little extra money.
944 has a wider body than the 924, but you can put the 944 body on a 924
I may be a traitor and get a 924 to soup' up. Mainly because it has a newer racer chassi. But its not set in stone. I may still get a Z when I sell the ZX. If I get the Porsche, I will still visit and act like I still have a ZX. ;-)

It's very common for guys trained to sell Porsches to mistake a Datsun for a Porsche.
Even though they live and breath Porsches 40 hours a week, they make this mistake all the time.
Only through years of experience and training can one distinguish the Z from a Porsche. God knows I can't tell the difference.
