Just bought 73 240z

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

I just bought this 73 240z from orig. owner, the car is complete inside and out, has orig. 95k miles, motor is all mech. sound. interior is very good. The owner had all paperwork including the orig. window sticker. However there was rust found in the floorpan, probably will need to repalce. I was real hesitant about buying this car because of the rust. I paid $600.00 for the car and am now wondering if that was too much??

Got any photos of the rust? If it's fixable without too much invested into it then I'd say that's a score!

Welcome to Zcar.com and the Z addiction!
$600 sounds like a pretty sweet deal considering the condition of the rest of the car.
I'm not sure where you are located, but people who live in the rust belt would love to get a deal like that.
I paid $400 for my '73 but it came with this-

Does it have the original paint?, battery tray?, frame rails? How much rust on the floor pan?

The paint is a couple of years old in its orig. color, the battery tray, frame rails all original. Not real sure how much rust is on the floorpan yet. This car has not been touched other than the paint.

sorry, I meant how are the battery tray, frame rails? Any rust there? What about the rear valance?
I got lucky and found an original paint '73 and I could tell where the problem areas were. Fenders, battery tray, frame rails were all great. The floor pans have a couple of .50 spots of rust. Rear valance is great.
It wasn't running, but I didn't care about the mechaincals. It's the condition of the body that sold me on the car. $500.
New or fairly new paint can hide a lot of problem areas. Poorly patched rust holes, body filler etc. Get a sheet fridge magnet and go over the car to look for any suspect areas. Tapping your finger tips along the body can find questionable areas as well.

Sounds like a deal. I just picked up my '73 240z last weekend, and it too is in great shape, and the frame rails, battery tray and floor pans have only a little rust. Paid $1500, but like Darrel said, I was only interested in the shell - it came with a slew of parts already installed or upgraded... and a blown motor. Good luck with it!

Darrel
No rust in or around the battery tray, or the valance. The rust that I could see was just in the floorpan where your feet would be if sitting in the car, just in that area as far as I could tell. I dont have the car at my house yet so I havent been able to get the car in the air yet. I got on the ground and was able to see the rust in those areas. Just as soon as I get the car in my garage I will be able to do a better inspection. When I first saw the car and the price my heart about jumped out of my throat, then when I spotted the rust it fell down to my stomach. I then took my wife over to look at the car and she just fell in love with the car. I showed her the rusted area and told I wasnt sure if this was worth it, she says: The rust isnt that bad is it? She really wanted to get the car so we got it anyway.
I will for sure take the magnet over the car, thanks

Thanks alot RobRob

Sounds like you stole it!

I just repaired my rusty frame rail, floor pan area and really it wasn't that difficult. You just have to get the nerve up to do the cutting. Buy a MIG welder, and a Sawzall and go at it.

I will get a MIG and the nerve to go at it. I think I will just cruise it around for the summer and then jump in it, in the fall
Thanks Zupp

Maybe the steal of the year! Even if you find bondo/body work and some more rust spots, it was a good deal. You can sell the motor and other parts out of the car for far more than $600 total, so you basically can't lose! Good score.

Thanks Cmcniel , I didnt look at it like that, thanks!!

I had floor panas fixed for $400. The guy had a metal break & made the patch match the contour of the old floor. I like it much better than welding in a flat piece. Have some POR 15 sprayed into the frame rails when you fix the floor. TReat any rust areas you find. You got at deal.
Anyone can drive a new car.

A:

can you put your feet through the rust? if not you've got a good deal. especially if you're able to act fast and stop the rust you could avoid replacement of the floorpans. Either way you got a steal.
