Blown turbo pic

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Went to the garage and snapped a pic of the compressor on the blown turbo...still havent dropped the downpipe so I don't know (nor do I really care at this point) what the hot side looks like.
Still don't have a clue as to what caused it, as the turbo still has no shaft play and spins freely....she blew quite a bit of oil into the intake when it went though..

icky

were u even running an air filter?

A:

yep, brand new & oiled K&N

A:

k&N sucks thats why.. they let in too much dirt

A:

Possible cause:
If BOV, recycle system failed then back pressure on compressor when closing TB could have caused the wheel to twist and hit the wall and break the fins.
The oil seal could have leaked during the process and back pressure differential from the TB side of compressor may have blown the oil backwards into the intake.
If the compressor bits jammed the exhaust or intake valves then the exhaust pulses from other cylinders or from that cylinder would have reverted into the intake thus the carbon/oil you see.
If the rings bleu then the black gunky stuff is recycled blow by from busted rings

whitezster - Your comments are appreciated, but you really have no idea what you are talking about so please go away. There are tens of thousands of high performance cars with much much much more money under the hood than I have, and they trust their engines to K&N, so that's good enough for me.
Blue, you raise a good point, I'll have to check the valve cover tube to see if it's got oil in it.
I still cant figure out how in the hell my intake was seeing 8lbs of boost when I cranked the engine with the throttle open though. It's a mechanical gauge so I know it wasnt a electrical problem, and I could hear it hissing out after I stopped cranking.

Another posibility is the SURGE

The 8psi of pressure may be from the valves being bent/stuck/opening at the wrong time, causing the pistons push air out of the intake ports into your intake manifold.
Thats all I can think of anyway.

Yeah I'd say that turbo failed.
Twice I've had the stock turbos go one step past that. I've actually sheared the the inducer blade of the shaft. From what I can tell I believe it is from the surge in the intake despite the stock check valve. It caused the bushings in the turbo to wear excessively until the blades made contact with the housing. When this happened I guess I had one warning. The turbo made a loud shriek noise. I was able to drive normal for a few days but the first time I got ruff with it the turbos just seized. One seized during a run and like I said the inducer blade wheel just started rattling around in the housing.
I say all this because I had one other warning. I had a gradual build up of oil in the intake. I had taken it apart a few time prier and paid no attention to it not knowing the difference. The oil was coming from 2 places. One was the turbo itself. Two was blow by. It goes out you valve cover down the breather and into the inlet for the turbo.
I pretty sure that JeffP can back that theory up as he had a very similar problem recently.
I run a K&N on 3 of my Z cars. They get the job done fine.
One of my cars currently is going to have a turbo just like that very soon. I don't drive it because I don't want to take the rest of the engine out when it granades.

The only time I've seen K&N filters cause a problem is with newer vehicle and the MAS -- the oil from the filter likes to take them out in a short period of time. Just had one leave the shop yesterday from it, and I'll probably see at least 6 more before the end of the month with the same problem. Other than that, 3 out of 4 of my Z's are running K&N filters, and the 4th one will receive one when it comes out of paint jail.

Actually that is mostly a problem with GM products. Although I have seen it on a few other manufatures. Chevy and GMC gas trucks can have there warranty voided if it can be proved that a K&N took out the MAS sensor. We had a flyer at work from K&N with a warning.

This is not the cause. Especially on a small T3. You may eventually wear a thrust bearing from it but not on a T3.
A piece of something had to get into the inlet somehow. Is it related to the oily mess, I don't know. It is not blown if it's still attached the turbine wheel. You could fix it.
