tire size help

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

My friend has a 03 cobra...with about 500bhp...needless to say, its quick. Im helping him get tires, he already has some wheels. 19x8.5 in the front, and 19x10 in the rear. Im trying to figure out what size tires will fit. Hes not too picky about the front size, so Im thinking about 255-40 or 275-40 in front. Now the rear is a different story. Its hard to find a matching set, PLUS Im not sure how wide he can go...he wants a 305....but will go as low as 285's ONLY if he has to. Anyone with mustang experience help! Im sure he can fit the 255 or 275 pretty easy in the front, no problems. So suggestions on rear. By the way, the car is NOT lowered, and he isnt going to.

personal opinion: if he goes with a low pro, and doesnt lower it, it will look like crap. I would think he would have to get like a 50 or 55 series tire to fill up the wheel well some, without lowering it.
Anyway, you could probably put a 245-255 tire on the front, at the most. as far as the back goes, the biggest that ive seen for a 10 wide wheel is 295, but thats with a 35 series tire. Wouldnt look good without lowering, but thats just MO.

Well, I just went and took some measurements. Its going to be tight even with a 35, 40 series tire. And I have seen them without being lowered, and it doesnt look that bad...im with you though, I would much rather lower the car, and go with a smaller tire...but to each his own. it comes from the factory with 17x10's, I THINK, I know its a 17, just not sure about the width. With 275-40's.

Just not the correct place to ask. This is a specific question for a Cobra board. There are many of them that will answer the question while taking in the specifics of that car.
Any 300 mm wide tire on a sports car is going to be in the 35 ratio.
Anytime you go big in the front (265 +) you are going to affect the handling. Specificly, it will become squirrly in a straight line and follow road imperfections more readily. You might also be changing a car from mild understeer to mild oversteer with neutral throttle.

17x8 gt wheels use a 245/45 R 17 stock, so an 8.5 wide should be able to go 255-275 without any trouble. these are 2 inches taller though so the sidewall is up to him to figure out. 295 on the back sounds about right.

I know a guy that ran 315s on the back of his 04 Mustang GT, he had to roll the fender lip. I think they were 17s, what ever size they put on vipers, thats what they came off of.

one of my buddies use to roll on 275s out back on his fox w/ 5 lug and they were just some sm95+ mustang rims so im guessing probably only 8.5in maybe 9 so i think you could get somewhere around 300 on 10 in
but you should probbaly just jump on a cobra board real qucik like Zin said
