there is a throttle position sensor on those bama...the injectors might be clogged also if the filter was that bad...

You're going the right route. From what you said, the next thing I would do is check the fuel pump and you're about to. If that doesn't fix it, check for vacuum leaks.

Get your sawzall, and cut the pipe in front of the catyletic converter and run it that way for a few minutes to determine if the cat is plugged.......it happened to my wife's Saturn just like you described.
If the cat is good, you can buy or make a sleeve, and two pipe clamps to re-attach it.

No one has mentioned the fuel filter. They do plug up and it may be the problem. And I'm not talking about the one in the tank. There's another one along side of the frame.

if its not the filter, pull the PU unit in the tank.

hmmmmm or you could just take it to a shop and have them run some test for $80 and tell you exactly whats wrong instead of the good ole lets just throw money at it - but hey if thats what you like to do have fun

but hey...that's what i wanna do so thanks for the advice. it was all mantainance work anyway...and my work paid me and not some overcharging mechanic. i picked up the OBD 2 reader...it passed the first time...so i checked fuel pressure...pressure was right on so i unplugged and plugged the TPS...or they call it a pedal posiion sensor and the check engine light came on...ran the codes again and it said the TPS was bad. put a new one in and all is well....i don't throw money at anyhing...i think new cap and rotor that was needed along with replacing a screen in the tank that was black with dirt is a far cry from throwing money at it. and it's kinda odd....that screen in the tank is the only type of fuel filter it has....no inline filter on the car. thanks all.
