Renault bailed out Nissan and now GM. Who'd of thunk it?
A:
This is a powerful rich guy throwing his weight around. The article does not mention anybody from GM, Renault, or Nissan has even considered this as a viable plan.
I think GM will remember the "merger of equals" that occurred when Daimler courted Chrysler. Within a week after the deed was done it was obvious the merger was a takeover.
It will be interesting to see what comes of this - if anything beyond some news exposure for Kerkorian. He does like to do things to drive up the price of his stock holdings.

French have to be good for something.

No.....no.....no. GM can't merge with Nissan. That would be like dogs and cats living together. God and Satan sleeping together. Oil in water! Please no.

I hope you all realize that there will be nothing but trouble for anyone who touches GM with less than a 100ft stick. It would be a stupid move even for the government to bail them out. Actually, maybe it would be a good thing because then the American people would be even more pissed off that their tax money was blown (forget Iraq, GM is the reigning bottomless spending pit).
As for brand loyalists: wow, you guys must really be ignorant. To still have faith in such a garbage product (after many decades of shady "engineering" and apparently successful brainwashing)
I hope those GM exec ba****ds rot in a junkyard, with their masses of crappily built cars. All I can say for now, is that I am surprised that GM didn't die sooner (as soon as they became publicly traded stock)

I dunno' much about all of this. Question is, is it safe for Nissan to breath some life back into GM? GM makes some quality stuff. Though political backing and motives is another issue.
A:
Maybe Nissan will be the next Saab.
Just look at the '94 Saab 900 that was rushed to the market with tons of problems or the thousands of sludged up 2.0L and 2.3L motors (which GM tried to blame on the owners) to see what I mean.

I would like to see one Datsun bring in what one 70 LS6, GSX, 67 L88, or any old restored old GM can bring in on Barrett-Jackson. We drive Datsuns because you can get them cheap not because you can restore them and make money. Look at what happened to the 500 240 Nissan was going to redo, less then half of them made it out of the program. People spent about 30K for them but it was costing nissan more like 50k per car. Less then a year later you would see one here or there on ebay going for under 25K...
Show me one site you can get any part you want for a Datsun like yearone and others make with knowing it is going to fit like it should. If you have the money you can build a 69 Camero in any form you want, starting out with an empty garage and have a brand new car... Now there is some redesigning the suspension on the Mopar stuff being worked on to make them handle like sportcars of today! We got a hand full of people working on a few parts that are made for our cars and look how much those items cost...
Here is an example of a google search on "restoration chevy body"
Results 1 - 10 of about 1,360,000
Here is the same search on "restoration Datsun body"
1 - 10 of about 101,000

Those silly "numbers matching" garage queen muscle cars are for novelty purposes only.
American muscle cars are worth a lot because they are a part of American culture and the baby-boomers with deep pockets want to relive thier youth in that car they had back and college and "never should have sold".
A car is worth what someone with too much money is willing to pay for it!

oh yeah,,,you can sell stuff chebby made 40 years ago for good money. they actually made halfway decent cars back then. so did dodge.
can you do that with something they made in the 80's? 90's?
does an early 90's chevy hold value as well as the z32's?
it seems chevy steadily decreased in quality, and nissan steadily increased in quality, along with most other import makers.
hell, even hyundai and kia backs thier products better than ford AND GM.
keep searching for redeeming qualities about GM,,,,IN MODERN TIMES.

After 1974 I don't know of any G.M. built car that is of great quality, or is high on a collectors list. Except for a few collector cars like the Pontiac Trans AM Pace cars, Corvettes and the 80's buick Grand Nationals. G.M. has been behind the import manufacturers since the late 70's and still is.
There is not as much of a market to make everything available to fully restore a Z compared to a Muscle car, I am in full agreement with that. But comparing each other is like Apples and Oranges.
Would I pay $30,000.00 or more for a certain 60's or 70's Muscle car, Yeah.
Would I pay that much for a 240Z, No.
Would I pay $15,000.00 for a fully restored 240Z from Nissan, Yeah.
Would I pay $15,000.00 for a fully restored Malibu, Skylark, or Caprice. No.

As the "Baby Boomer" generation dies off the nostalgic cars of our youth will not be so interesting and drop in value - as did the generatrion before mine.
Of course one-of-a-kind marques like Dusenburg, RollsRoyce and that group will always be valuabel - but unless top-of-the and pristine the cars of the 20', 30's & 40's have gone done in value.
I haven't checked in a few years so maybe the trend has stoped or reversed - but the Barret-Jackson auction I think over-all are hyped and not true value.
What would those cars bring in a year or two? The economy may not sustain those kinds of prices.
