Towed car

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

My husband and I recently bought a house and moved out of our apartment. We had a 97 Hyundai Elantra Wagon (the worst vehicle ever made) that we were donating to a charity group. We talked with our ex-landlord about the car being donated and he told us that it was fine to leave it for the charity to come and tow it. We contacted a place called Outreach Charity. They were going to come tow the car @ no charge...as most charities do. We drove by our old place and saw the car was still there. We decided to call another charity the next day to come get it. We called the landlord to tell him of the change and he told us that the charity had come and got it that day. A week and a half later we get a certified letter from our local police department notifying us that the police had towed the car. We were never notified before hand or after the fact when and who towed the car....basically we were left in the dark. On the letter it says..."If the car is unclaimed 48 hours after the tow, that the tow co. must sent the owner the yellow copy". Well...we weren't notified until we got the certified letter, so we couldn't claim it within 48 hours of the tow!. Landlord didn't call us nor the tow co. or the police. Turns out the landlords brother had the car towed and never said anything to us or his brother, our ex landlord. Now the tow co says we owe over $300 in towing and storage. My question is....aren't they...police, landlord and/or the tow co. legally supposed to notify us of the tow within a day of the tow? Does anyone know what our rights are to this matter? We live in CT. THANX!!!!

Sounds to me like you're stuck in one of those never ending loops where the police won't take care of it because they were called to come get the car, the tow company just happened to be the ones in the cicle that night to get and they want their money for the gas and time spent towing it. The only route you have is through the landlords brother who will of course refuse to pay. You can take him to small claims court, but typically only 2% of small claims ever get settled.
Sorry for the bad news. Good luck.

If you want the car back then you'll have to pay. But since you don't, let the tow company have it. They will treat it just like any other abandoned car. Just don't offer them the title, let them work for it if they want it that bad.
Of course states have different laws concerning abandone vehicles.

Call the tow company and tell them what happened. If they are smart they will ask for your title so they can donate it to the same charity.
You lose your tax right off while they gain one but the car still gets to a charity.
Other than that you're screwed. It will most likely be sold at auction.

Something tells me that once the tow company gets the title they will sell it for themselves and not donate it to charity.
One question, was the car driveable? If it was why didn't you drive it down to the charity yourself?
The ex landlords also have to talk to each other, it doesn't seem like neither knew what the other was doing.

I experienced a similiar situation a couple of years ago. I donated a car to a charity who picked it up within a week. A month later I got a bill from a towing company way across the state for towing and storage fees and a warning from the Connecticut State Police stating that my car had been abandoned on the side of I84. It appears that the car went to auction, was purchased and broke down on the way to the buyer's home. They abandoned it on the side of the road. Since I was the last registered owner, the tow company and the state police assumed I was the owner.
I called the state police explaining that the title had been signed over to the charity and after explaining the circumstances to the tow company, they were more then happy to keep the car and I didn't have to pay the storage fees.

those "charity" places will only keep cars that are in the best of condition, otherwise they will propably just dump it or not even take it at all.

Have someone land a few on your ex car and let them clean up the mess. Sue the bastards for the vandelism. Sure it's fraud, but eye for an eye I say...
