oil leak finished for good!!!

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

man i should have done a write up...
i mamaged to replace my valve guide seals on the car, without a spring compressor.
i wound up using 2 huge flathead screwdrivers, and had la260 remove/reinstall the keepers while i held them down... it worked great (exept 2 valves). i didnt score the cam at all, and everything worked out peachy!!
no more white puffy clouds, and tearjerking fumes.... its beautiful!!!
the old seals werent even sealing on the valve... causing about 1qt leaks every 500miles. and for some reason it has better oil pressure... could just be the new oil... but its read better than its ever.. so i dunno.
either way, if your Z leaks oil... dont think off the top of you head that your rings are gone... most likely they arent. just man up, and take care of those seals!!! best 21 dollars ive spent in a while!
just needed to get that off of my chest! :)
now on to make a custom urethane tranny mount, and get some new rear a-arm bushings... i think thats where i have some vibration... damn it.

That's pretty straightforward to do, you were able to get "engine mount" or "balancer rebondking" kits from Clark's Corvair Parts in the past---the instructions that come with them will tell you all you know about prepping the older metal mounting peices for accepting the new urethane pour-in bonding agent, and you simply make a clay dam and pour it in there and let it set up.
But if you aren't talking about the mount that goes directly on the transmission (OMFG< I realize now where those mounts came from on that other post!!!) and are talking about the ones that go on the crossmember to the tunnel brackets, they (Energy Suspensions) already makes urethane mounts for those! They come in a kit.
Beware, urethane transmits MORE noise and vibration that the OEM rubber, though! I did that on my VW Bus and could have slid mounted it for the noise transmission I got through that damn front urethane nose mount!!!
"causing about 1qt leaks every 500miles"
Not a leak, "consuming" a quart every 500 miles. If you get behind mine, I will "rustproof" your front end if you stay close enough! I have bought two sets of valve seals, and lost them both before getting around to installing them.
Eeeh, Oil's cheap, and I'm fat, dumb and lazy, as well as having spare change for oil, so I'm happy with the situation for now I suppose.
Maybe I'll buy a third set and loose those as well!
;^P
Good to hear you "saved and overhaul" for the diagnostic fee of $21 and some time!

it wasnt so much the consuming of oil... it was the exhuast fumes when i downshifted... my eyes would water...
but its all good now!!!
as for the tranny mount, i was thinking of doing something along the lines of the urethane diffy mount using sway bar bushings (theres a write up on it somewhere on here). i figure since i have a set laying around... and a lotta time on my hands... why not. its the mount that bolts to the tranny... the ones that go to the Xmember are fine.
its wierd... above 80, when i shift from 4th to 5th, theres like a shudder, and then it catches.
that and from 50-60, theres this odd vibration, in any gear. the wheel bearings are fine, i checked that... i swapped the diffy out (87' 3.70), and my halfshafts and driveshaft u-joints are new... and have little to no play.
from the looks, everything is okay down there... so im off to replace bushings... to freshen it up, and hopefully stop the vibration and shuddering.
hey tony, can you think of why its shuddering and vibrating?? im thinking the shuddering is the tranny mount, and the vibration is the rear driverside a-arm bushings...

Mine was a broken rear tranny mount.
the transmission would deflect causing angularity on the front driveshaft U-Joint making it vibrate hard as hell in third gear as the speed increased above 50mph.
It definately sounds driveline (driveshaft) related, except for the 50-60 in all gears part of it.
Mine wouldn't show until above 90 in fourth when on it hard. It was related to the rpms of the driveshaft.
Check for deflection. I did a cursory check, saw a big dent in the driveshaft, and went and got another one.
Went to change it, lifted up on the tranny end to pull it out, and the tranny lifted clear from the trans mount!
OH, THAT MIGHT HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT!
LOL
Changed the rear mount and it stopped. If the front engine mounts are spongy, it can contribute to the misalignment at the back as well....
Good Luck!

sounds like my problem... when i pulled the tranny to do the clutch, the tranny lifted off of the rear Xmember.....DOH!
ill let you know on the progress!!!!
