A&Q about 350Z
Q:

i ran across a ebay ad for shipping a 5 speed 280z tranny. seems the guy wants to charge $350 to ship to California and all other states $150. Even $150 to ship a tranny is fugged up. The guy is on crack when a tranny can go coast to coast for $75 or less.
So Im wondering why the $200 surcharge just to Ca. He wont say why.

Well depending on where its comming from & how fast its getting there that could about right. Example my bad rad from MSA to ship back from Canada to get there in 3 days or less would be on average of $300 (I sourced UPS, Puralotor & Fedex). There are tougher regulations at the U.S. border now & everything must go through customs inspection & have proper documention if the parcel is above a certain size. Plus the high cost of fuel so there is a fuel surcharge on top of it. This does not include duties that are also levied. I opted for the Expited US post with delivery conformation $80.00 & 7 - 9 busines days. That reminds me I have to bitch at MSA today they have had my rad since July 19 & have not sent a return.

I have shipped two Z trannys with FedEx Ground and they run around $75-$90, so the seller is looking to put some $$$ in his pocket, I hate when they profit on the shipping - very dishonest!

anyone who ships trannies knows coast to coast coast its less than $90. To charge $350 is a helluva lot for packaging (must be in a platinum box). i said id have someone pick it up to save on shipping and he said nope, it can only be shipped (gee i wonder why)....

A:

that guys an ass clown brian.i live in san diego so if you find something down here let me know.i can go get it and ship it for you.i can find out what shipping would cost you.my wifes company does business with fed ex.it's a constructon company so they're use to shipping heavy things.i can probably save you alot of money.buy the way what kind of tranny is it?

i just shipped a tranny and cost $130 from tx to california. $75 sounds like a great deal, i never heard of that deal though. It was a bw 5-speed, and we put wood around it to protect it, then put it in the box. Box was 36x24x21. Weight came to around 120-140. They said anything over 100 lbs was too heavy for regular shipping, so it had to be freight.
So just to say, "seller is looking to put some $$$ in his pocket" and that he is being dishonest, is not necessarily true. Of course $350 is too much, yeah, but you shouldn't always assume that the person is just trying to be evil and dishonest!

When you offer to pick it up and he still wants $350 for shipping, I'd say that's pretty friggin' dishonest.
He figures he won't get what he wants for it at the auction, so he expects to make it up on the inflated shipping costs.
Please, don't tell me he's just a victim of the inflated gas prices.
I have large items shipped world wide and although I get a discount for the regular business, $120 to ship from coast to coast ground for a retail customer is reasonable, $350 is pure robbery. To refuse customer pickup to avoid inflated shipping costs is grand theft!

I can ship 400# in a crate TRUCK FREIGHT for $300.
A 75# UPS Ground package coast-to-coast is nowhere near that cost.
It is the typical "no reserve" e-bay scam. Like those guys who buy H4 Lights on e-bay for $19 a pair, then get nicked for $30 shipping...
They are making their money on the shipping, insuring that whatever the part sells for, they are covered by idiots who don't ask questions.
(FYI, I believe H4 Lights charges something like $49 a pair and includes shipping for free, UPS Ground---so is the "e-bay deal" really a deal at all?)

LOL, i agree that it seems like this particular guy is up to something dishonest! Not agreeing to do local pick up is wrong, and $350 is waay too much!
I'm, just saying, when I shipped a transmission a few days ago, the receipt was $130.58, and that doesn't include the $6-7 for box! So just because it's more than the $75 or less that some people normally pay, doesn't mean I was ripping this guy off! In fact, I THOUGHT shipping would be less, and only charged the guy like $115 for shipping, but figured the $20 difference wasn't too big of a deal for me to pay. I didn't profit anything from the shipping, I lost on it. So, like I originally said, don't always assume that just because one guy charged more for shipping means that he is being dishonest!!

Try Greyhound, reasonable rates and happy to ship it.

A:

is a reasonable amount of variance. Especially if they can provide receipts. That's what? Maybe 30-40% increase over what is or would be considered a 'cheap' rate? $350? That's a 300 to 460% increase over the normal range of "cheap" to "normal"
The number quoted is unreasonable and unjustified for shipping within the continental USA.
For $350, you can ship a complete engine and transmission coast to coast.
For $800, you can ship the whole damn CAR, uncovered, provided it runs and drives onto the trailer...

Well it depends on fast you want it. If you want it in a couple of days ya you are going to pay............however if this is a 2 - 3 week delivery than its an obvious rip off.

hi zlion, i almost nabbed a tranny last week in SD. my daughter goes to school down there so its an easy pick up for us. im tired of waiting for my 240sx tranny machining to get done so am about to put another 280z tranny in.
there are big differences in shipping $$$ between even fedex and ups for trannies (leastthere used to be).

280Z 5 speed from Florida shipped to me in Las Vegas, $75
300ZX engine blook sent from Maine to me $90
280Z full door sent to me from NC $115
LD28 Crank from NYC sent to me $55
There you go and Las Vegas pretty much has the same charges as LA and San Diego since everything stops in Tucson before going to any of the three.

S30 one of these days I will get around to putting it all back together.

I just paid $110 to get less than a pound of packing chips from Victoria British to Calgary, Alberta. Oh and 3 small tabco panels too.
I HATE UPS!!! They charge 500% more than US post, deliver at a later date, then fudge up the delivery (multiple times on seperate occasions), and force me to make an hour drive to pick it up at the warehouse where it usually takes 45 minutes for them to find the parcel (or tell me it isn't there).
I have not once EVER had a successful delivery by UPS; not at home, not at work, not even at my previous job, not under a friends name to his address, not even when I GIVE THEM THEIR OWN WAREHOUSE ADDRESS (HFPU) AND AGREE TO PICK IT UP. They sent it out with a driver and he doesent finish his run until after the warehouse office closes.
I can understand why companies use UPS because they pick-up parcels, but they sure as hell can't find their own hand whilst it us elbow deep in their ass. This "pleasant" skill helps nobody get their FREAKING CAR PARTS.
I even went as far as to open up a corporate account (fake business name but my address) and provide GPS co-ordinates to my front door. All that got me was tons of customer service calls about using their on-demand services and BS that I didn't want to use. I just wanted whatever overpriced shipping option I paid +$100 to be worth it. I don't even mind if it is bent and delivered to me at supper-time by a rude UPS driver, I just want it delivered.
:end of rant:

A:

Oh man, I hear ya about UPS. I live in Calgary and have had every order from COZ f#$ked up by UPS. Same thing, I would ask for HFPU and they would send it out for delivery.
My favorite line thus far:
UPS: "So, what was in the package"
ME: "Three bottles of tranny fluid"
UPS: "Would that be in an envelope or a box?"
WTF? I swear to god that's what she said.

Shipping from Birmingham Alabama to Liverpool England.
Delivery Time 16 Days.
4 Packages, 20x20x13, 35 pounds each, $482.17.
Contents: Harmonizing Code 8708.70.0050 Road Wheels, Automotive
So that's damn quick shipping for 140 pounds, ACROSS THE OCEAN for just a little more than what that bozo wants for shipping a transmission half the weight, half the distance.
Excessive!

I love UPS and FEDEX. Ive never had a problem with either of them shipping or delivering. Both are withi na mile of my house also, so I just flip a coin but generally its Fedex. I get racing tires all the time by UPS and they are right on time and not torn up.

When I was looking for motors they were wanting $600 for shipping. Though it is considered a freight shipment, $600! I got the hood of a car for $200 (also a freight shipment), which I thought was high. It was from an OEM retailer, their pricers are usually higher.
