A&Q about 350Z
Q:

This has really been annoying me lately, because I see it in probably 30% of all car descriptions on Ebay:
...something something... "needs replaced".....
Needs Replaced???? Did someone change the English language without sending me the memo? I'm no English teacher, but isn't mixing future tense with past tense in the same sentence a no no??? For anyone out there struggling with this, please insert as follows: "needs TO BE replaced".
OK, I feel better now.
Really.
Allright, it still bothers me.

I guess after being out of English class for 23 years, and working in a factory enviroment, it's not all that bad.......sorry.

I'd rather have an honest evaluation by someone who can't spell or construct a proper sentence than a less-than-honest one by a good writer. But as long as we're on the subject, the my eBay pet peeve is these guys who use 'very rare' to describe things that have never been rare. "Extremely rare battery hold down" was one of my favorites. Yeah, right. Can't find those anywhere anymore.

There was some guy at an antique store who was trying to sell Beatles Red and Blue albums for 60 bucks apiece (I collect records so I was interested). Good thing I didn't buy them because they go for 3 bucks + shipping on eBay.
Just because you've never seen it doesn't mean it's rare.

hey dfb280Z i type in lower case is that a problem:) because i will not stop.just for that i'm going to rewrite my ad in the classifieds.for all the things that need replacing i'm going to write needs replaced.too ad to veryone elses frustration how about when they put "totaly restored" back in 1983.or some famous actor drove it when they probably sat in it once.usualy when they say it's restored it's not.they put a cheap paint job on it and some new tires.give it a minor tune up and there you go and mark it up about 6-8 grand.then you go to lift the hood and it looks like complete ass.there's restored and refreshed, restored means just that restored.a complete tear down and rebuild of everything.it's basicaly brand new when your done.refreshed means a repaint ,seat coverings replacing some hoses new wheels and tires.the basics to clean a car up and make it look presentable.thats what i think! just my.03 cents

zlion,
Yeah, I just saw one an Ebay dealer was selling. He included an appraisal:
Mr. [ ] has recently completed a one year ground up restoration of this classic sports car, This restoration was completed at a cost in excess of $6000.00, and included a high performance engine rebuild, new exhaust, uprated suspension, reconditioned bumpers, all new interior, new brakes, all new rubber and weather-stripping, new moldings, new carpets and a high quality exterior paint scheme."
-Classic Auto Appraiser
Yorba Linda, CA
It looks like much more than 6k was spent here, especially if he didn't do the work himself. So how did they do all that quality work for less than 7 grand??
Oh, and I don't care about your lower case usage. Writing is not a strong subject for most of us (including me). I've been noticing the same gramatical error over and over, and thought there must be some reason many people are using this incorrect vernacular.
Here are some examples from currently listed vehicles:
Distributor vaccume advance needs replaced, which makes for slow start sometimes, tach doesn't work, and ac needs to be charged, but compressor does work.
The engine runs but has a severe exhaust manifold gasket leak. The ignition switch is kind of touchy & needs replaced
This is closer:
... rear passenger side quater window and that will nead to be replaced.
I am now done venting.

I always wondered why they call a building a building when it is already built. Shouldn't they call it a "built" when it is finished?
All kidding aside, I too share your dismay with what I see on the I-net. I recently took some graduate level classes for licensing requirements and was quickly reoriented to the importance of proper grammar, spelling and punctuation. I received a 99% on a twenty page paper because the professor felt that I misplaced one comma. Different standards!

I don't think is bad grammar on ebay, dishonest sellers try to conceal mayor crap by playing "honest-ignorant" etc etc
Have you shared the left lane today?

A:

Its buyer beware on ebay. Ifa buyer is stupid enough to buy a car sight unseen in person by himself then all bets are off.

Don't feel bad - feel grateful that you have an education to notice and care about it.
What would all of our old English teachers think if they saw the sloppy undeucated use of the language today?
I'll be the first to admit I get sloppy and or type faster than my brain can think and then do not check to see if my thoughts were cohearant.
I've seen incredably bad grammer in memos by supervisors at work.
Long ago there was a conserted effort to dumb down American education for certain disadvantaged groups in this country.
Well there are not enough of "those people" in higher lever jobs.
Why?
Because not enough of "those people" are qualified for those jobs.
Why?
Because not enough of "those people" are graduating college.
Why"
Because not enough of "those people" are entering college.
Why?
Because not enough of "those people" are graduating college.
Why?
Because not enough of "those people" can pass the tests.
Why?
Because not enough of "those people" are teachers.
Why"
Because not enough of "those people" are graduating college.
and so on - soooo -
They lowered the standards for "those people".
They made quotas for "those people"
and so on ---
Read what ever group you like for "those people" but before you call me names -
I meet and work with a very widely diverse group of pople, professionals from all over the world.
Do NOT tell me I'm racist when I complain about generations of Americans who say they are discriminated against - when the very same color, ethnic minoirty, race, religion and what have you can and have
come to this country as new legal immegrants, learned English if they didn't speak it as a first language
and became professionals - doctors, nurses, high paid technicians, teachers - educated productive people.
Some people care to improve themselves and will overcome any obstacle to do so.
And some do not.

erzelda, now that I know you reside in Houston, at least some of the time, I can certainly relate. While the 'system' can always be blamed, eventually one has to stand up and demand from him/herself the education and knowledge one needs to succeed. The "1st" generations as I call them, are unbelieveably driven and successful business owners, whether it is a vietmamese dry cleaners or a persian used car lot. The 2nd generation seem to leach off their parents because they have the luxery of that choice. I say this with VERY first hand experience on a daily basis.
However, many other types of immigrants don't come here to take advantage of our economical opportunities to better themselves, they come to exploit them until those systems designed for good are drained into oblilvion. I give the people that built and allowed these systems to decay 90% of the blame.
I'm middle class at best, and have been below middle class since my father has been out of work, though we've managed to keep the house. My highschool was 60% black, 25 hispanic [about 1/2 knew english], 10 asian, and 5 white [me included]. The school was also not a great public school, whether you assumed that already or not.
However, I go to UT austin and make decent grades, pay for everything myself, live in a decent apartment, have a decent car [though it's currently not running] and a late model sportbike, and only 2k in 0% interest debt.
How? Busted my balls, just like I'm doing now working in a warehouse 60hrs/week so I can half-way enjoy my college life w/o working and taking my 16/17 hours.

I work in a hospital - and the vast majority of people I see are hard working.
At the same time I see a bunch of leeches now and then.
My hat (I wear one all the time outdoors) is off to any and all that work.
I'd give a butt kick to the leeches but then I'd be abridging their civil rights, and I'd pay the system twice for the leech.
Too bad the Founding Fathers didn't write in a Bill of Wrongs!
