Given that the narration was by Martin Sheen and had Ed Begley on camera for a sound bite, it should tell you that it's a crock of s***. The tree huggers love electric cars because the polution doesn't happen in any place they can comprehend. In other words, they seem to think that if the pollution isn't coming right out of the tailpipe, it's not happening.
Lot's of people like to believe in conspiracies that aren't there. With the case of the EV-1, those people happen to be Hollywood nutcases who decided to make a film about their perceived conspiracy.

I never understood why those things were lease-only.

Well in this case if you drive an electric car in California you most likely are not producing any emissions (directly or indirectly). Half of all of Californias electric supply comes from us in Washington state - from the Grand Coulee dam - the largest Hydroelectric producer in the country.
Of course if everyone had electric cars they have to get it from additional sources of course.
I don't really have an opinion on whether big oil killed electric cars but it is pretty probable. Goodyear and the car companies killed mass transit 60 years ago.

They were lease only because only people with a lot of disposable cash would be able to buy them. The car was very low volume with very few parts interchangable with the rest of the production lines.
The people who say "big oil" killed the electric car have little or no idea of how electricity is produced. There are lots of oil-fired electrical plants. If you think about it, if we switched over from gasoline powered to electrical power, the oil companies would stand to profit. After all, we have trouble building more hydroelectric plants, nuclear plants, or coal-fired because of environmental concerns. Oil-fired or natural gas fired would be the way to go. If people didn't use gasoline and relied upon the electrical grid to power their cars, the distribution costs would drop for oil companies since they wouldn't have to send trucks all over the place to deliver gas to the stations. They also wouldn't need to formulate all of the different blends of gasoline, further saving costs.
By the way, if we relied upon cars powered by the electrical grid, the costs for electricity would increase. The reason is simple: supply and demand. As more people demand electricity from the grid, the costs will increase, especially if we do not build more electrical plants. Also, increased electrical demand would create the need for more wires to carry the current. There isn't much usable copper left to mine. Prices for recycled copper are going up. If the power companies have to string more wire, they will pass the costs along to us. That doesn't even count for the costs of businesses putting in charging stations for us.
Until there are some amazing breakthroughs for fuel cells and/or hydrogen production/generation, getting off gas is not going to happen until there is an absolute crisis for oil production.

Hi folks,
What just kills me are the folks who are endorsing them. Not that I'm opposed to fuel-efficient means of transportation by any means. Think in terms if everyone could walk around with his or her "number". That is to say, the number of gallons of the worlds fuel you have personally consumed. Drive your car; take a trip on a plane, live in a five million dollar home and the number goes up. Take for example Alexandra Paul, the model/actress who endorsed the EV. Do you know how many times that woman has traveled around the world just to be photographed? How much fuel do you think was consumed in getting her to those worldwide locations JUST so she could be photographed?!!!! And she drives an electric car, SHUT UP!!!!!
I absolutely guarantee you I have used less of this worlds fuel than Alexandra Paul, Martin Sheen, Ed Bagley, Tom Hanks or any other celebrity who travels around the world at will and lives in a five million dollar home that they have to heat and cool. I'd like to know what their consumption numbers are. So now we have rich celebrity folks telling us to use less energy. SHUT UP!!!
You want to know who doesn't consume energy----poor people. They're the ones who turn off the air conditioning, if they even have it, and they're the ones who sit at home instead of taking a ride in the car because they can't afford it.
Having Tom Hanks giving advice on using less energy is like Hugh Hefner giving advice on celibacy. Tom Hanks --- SHUT UP!! REALLY!!

I heard about this on Air America radio. The local Creative Loafing show on there was telling about where in Atlanta to go see it. Although I think it's probably about as likely as the guy who had a very high mpg car by accident only to take it to the shop becuase of it & when he got it back it got normal gas mileage. All because of a big conspiracy theory.

Oil companies made hemp illegal becuase it was home grown. I don't see why the same interests wouldnt lead people to control other sources of competition. It's called the free market. Those with power control everyone else, including our laws. Kills democracy. That seems to be what people want more and more of every day though. My party is long gone, so let people have what they want I guese.

In the late 1970's, a friend of mine built an electric car out of an old Corvair (light weight, aerodynamic, cheap). We learned a lot about the technology.
1. No heater or A/C. The heater would require more energy than it takes to drive the car. Thats why the EV was only offered in the Southwest.
2. Limited range. We could get 60 miles from a 72 Volt/110 Amp Hour deep cycle lead-acid battery stack (if you drove slow). Better battery technologies can approach a 100 mile range. No cross-country trips.

3. Charging problems. The 80 Amp battery charger we made was limited by the power-pole transformer in front of the house. Any normal 110 or 220 outlet would be limited and increase charging times.
4. Solar power. If we covered the roof, trunk, and hood with solar panels it would take over 30 days of full sun to charge the batteries once.
5. Power. My friend moved to a house up a hill with a 1500 foot climb over 5 miles. We would need to charge the batteries three times to make it up the hill. He sold the car.
6. And the biggest point made above: The pollution still happens. It just happens somewhere else. The tree huggers can't see the forest for the trees.

The great thing though is that alot has changed since the 70's including every technology that supports EV's.
