A&Q about 350Z
Q:
Something is busted in the tranny, It is fighting my to put the clutch in, but only when moving, sitting still feels almost normal. Supposed to autocross it today, but this happened on the way there. But thanks to Gizmo, he let me use his Fairlady :)

im actually driving mine much more lately. i ve been putting 100 miles a week on it since the middle of summer and it seems the more i drive it the better it runs. and now it is running really good and im sooo happy about that. its cool to be able to work on things like interior or wheel polishing and think about getting it painted as opposed to trying to keep it running.

Besides it being in the 30's and 40's, it was a ton of fun. Met a guy with a BRE 2000 roadster who lives in town. Took me a while to figure out RHD, the distance on my left. But after 2 runs of bringing cones back to the finish line, I figured it out. :) Always have fun autocrossing! Especially with other Z's and Datsuns there.

We had a great time... the weather was overcast and a chilly 43 degrees though. I think all the turbos loved the cool air! We started out to the track and Aaron's clutch got real loose. We weren't too far away from my house so we went back and got the 350Z. I was going to race the Fairlady and offered Aaron his choice of cars - he chose the Fairlady (I would too!). The course was real tight. The 350Z did ok but a stock 350 with aging stock Bridgestones is like trying to guide a bull thru a china shop. Cones were flying everywhere on this tight course by all! Aaron's best time in the Fairlady was 63 sec. - mine in the 350 was 67 sec. Beat by my own car... hahahahahaha! Dave kicked ass as usual with the RX7. And Sean, hang in there buddy... There was a guy taking professional pics. I hope Furrin posts them somewhere so you can all have a look see. ;-) Jason didn't make it due to illness and Rob was MIA again! Ha!

Well, getting beat by a newbie in a POS Toyota Starlet was a slap in the face, but there's always next year. I think I need to ride with some people/have people ride with me to really figure this out.
I mean, it worked for Captain Slow himself:

Sean how I learned is to get out of your comfort zone. Not going to break anything in a parking lot. I also go and play in empty parking lots in the rain and snow. I do a lot of "learning" in parking lots

Sean, if you ride with me, I can only guarantee a 15 second reduction. LOL

Well, okay, maybe I can't drive with Jackie Stewart, but I think you get the idea!
I'm sure there are plenty of folks that would let me ride with them.

I think , more than anything, someone needs to ride with you. I more curious as to what you are doing.... or not doing. Maybe it's as simple as "trusting your car". ;-)

In the Fairlady yesterday I did the how you should do your runs a little backwards. You know, start slow and work your way to going faster. Well I'll do that in my Z because I know it, I know how it reacts and I know the breaking point of where it lets go.
But in the Fairlady, I didnt know it. For one, right hand drive.. very awkward for me at first. Second, auto.. didnt quite know if D would work or 2nd. Third, no boost. Dont have to plan for spool up and couldnt time it for my gain, I had to learn where the torque on a NA engine was. Last, tires. Not used to the non high performace summer tires, so I had to think of slower corner speeds than I wanted.
First run, I went all out, I wanted to know where the limits of the car were and how it reacted to throwing its weight around. I learned that it had alot of understeer, and weight shifts were going to be a little hairy if I didnt plan for the slide ahead of time... And learned I could get back on the gas a lot sooner with the NA.
Second run I wanted to figure out how to bring the understeer to a minimum. So I went slower, braked sooner going into the corners. Didnt feel good to me at all, felt like I was driving "scared" or with to much reserve.
Third run I knew the limits of the tires. Now to pick up or keep more speed through the corners, various slaloms, and the box's. For the slaloms, slower constant speed is all I could do there, along with braking a little more for the boxs since the car liked to slide on weight transfer. Corners I decided to go in hard and get it into a small slide by twitching the steering wheel before entering and then apply more throttle as I went trough keeping the backend in line as much as possible without causing understeer. Basically uspetting the balance.
Fourth run applied all I had learned. Felt good but I tried to pick up more speed in the slolam and got a little wide at the end, but still under control.
Like I said, if it were my car, I would have gotton faster with every run, becasue I know what it will do.

I wish you we could have teamed up, Aaron. It would have been great to see you drive my car and vice versa. Plus, you probably would have set some better times since my car is closer to yours anyway.
Roger, I think I may have mentioned this before, but those 215/60/14s are too fat for your 5.5 inch rims. Aaron probably would have done better with some stock size 195/70/14s or something like that. My dad said he actually noticed the Firehawks rolling over in the turns. On the other hand, they do look pretty cool!
BTW, here's where I got my Tokicos from:

I didn't buy those tires for the track......
A:
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that those Firehawks are POS's because I would have gone with that size too if I hadn't gotten Aaron's 15" rims. They do look a lot nicer than the skinny ones that were on there before.
