A&Q about 350Z
Q:

I think it ought to be against FCC regulations for any radio commercial to contain any form of emerency equipment sirens. Heard one just this morning on the radio and my first instinct is to look all around to determine which direction it is coming from and look for a place to pull out of the way. BIG distraction and hazardous in traffic when it is unnecessary.

You're right Ron that is annoying-
A buddy of mine got a Nextel phone w/ direct connect. Everytime their radio commercial came on it started with the direct connect 'Beep' sound and my buddy would grab his phone and yell "go ahead" not knowing it was a commercial. :O)

my pet peeve is when people actually leave a greeting their...it goes something like this:
"<PCS woman> You've reached the voice mailbox of <idiot person> hey this is joe, sorry I can't take your call, leave your name and number at the beep and I will call you back...<PCS woman> after the tone, please record your message, to end just hang up, or press pound for more options"

Its amazing rap stars actually sell that garbage to paying fans. My kids never got into the crap because they are just too civilized and educated to fall for it.

A:

(C)rap is not music. I try really hard not to laugh when I see a teenie booper/high school kid trying to act cool, blasting his (c)rap music on his weak stereo, wanna be black, driving his piece of **** down the street. "Look at me, I'm a loner and need some attention."
On a different note, there are STILL commercials with satellite radio. The commercial is the DJ yapping his mouth inbetween songs or after a series of songs. Just shut up and play the music. No talking please.
Also, when the satellite radio DJ is saying "yeah, I was at MacDonalds the other day, I meet this person blah blah blah," guess what he is advertising? "I went to a Rolling Stone [whatever] concert this past weekend in blah blah, I heard that they'll be playing again at blah blah this weekend," guess what band they are advertising.
The commercial is there, it's just indirect/hidden.

Right on target Ron....I hate it! You don't know how many times I've turned the radio down to find out for sure!. It's plain stupid and you'd think the FCC knows alot of prople are in their cars listening. Maybe at
least certain ones shouldn't be aired during prime rush hours anyway!
I work near the airport and used to be even closer. Too many times
I had to turn the radio down because the rumbling literally made it sound

I think I need to stand up for rap a little here:
There is a big differance between sh!t like 50 Cent and insanely talented groups like Jurassic 5. It's just like saying all country music is crap. Again, there is a differance between Garth Brooks and the friggin' Dixie Chicks.
Sorry, just bugs me when things are over generalized.

Umm...you think Garth Brooks is country? Dixie Chicks have far more talent than Garth Brooks. And are far more country too...but not really. That is all commercial crap. Country has become so tainted...many fall under the country bill really are pop.
Real Country artists:
-Hank Williams Jr
-Willie Nelson
-Merle Haggard
-George Strait (although lately he has veered)
-Brad Paisley (fellow Belmont alum like myself)
-Buck Owens
I will say... 9 times out of ten rap hurts my ears. Plus it is so overdone in today's culture. People jump on some bandwagon like they are truly expressing some sort of cultural message. They're not. They are just blending in with the times.
Besides, most rap artists, in order to establish some form of melody in their songs, steal music from previous stars. How else did people like Will Smith, Puff Daddy, 50 Cent, Kanye West, etc. get famous. They ripped off other peoples original work. That's what bugs me the most
However, in my days there have been several rap groups that I have enjoyed that I think bring more to the table.
-Outkast
-Dilated Peoples
-Roots
Those are really the only three rap groups I have ever listened to.
Now i am done with my rant.

CantZmee,
The country thing was just an analogy, I can't stand any of it. I don't mind some of the new style rock/pop country, but all in all I'm not a big fan. However, we could debate musical tastes all day, its to each his own.
I disagree with the "stealing" music statement. All music is a recycled progression. What about the first person to strike a G cord? or the most common rock progression of G,C,A,D...I think about a thousand song have that progression...rap/hip-hop is no differant nor do they claim to be.

Amazingly enough the following for Garth Brooks is tenfold what the following is for dixie chicks. Not to mention is basically one of the best-selling artists in the history of music. Even Garth Brooks doesn't claim to be the best singer, but if you've ever seen him perform, he'd put any rap group or rock group to shame. He is known for performance, and is just as country as any one else you named, he just happened to evolve when country started to evolve in the mid to late 80's. hmm, have been reading this topic, and I must say, rap in general (with only 10 exceptions) is nothing but swearing, shallow, and superficial singing. Every time I have heard rap, they are talking about one of the following: (in no particular order):
1. Bently's, bmws, mercedes, escallades, hummers....anything that shows status, to basically show off. Just because they have money, doesn't mean they have taste.
2. Money--how much they spend and on what, like: caviar, trips overseas, having private planes, or what kind of clothes they wear. Nothing but showing off, trying to prove something with money, with no class or course.
3. Pimpin the ladies, or jockin' the women--I mean cmon, half these rappers are married for christ sake! (with kids!) what are they pimping?? All it shows is that they consider women just objects, and still have a primitive view on women and how they "think" women should be treated...again no class.
4. Swearing---at least in the 80's, rap was much more into actually conceptualizing an idea and rapping about it...now its all just useless drivel with a whole lot of F this, F that, B*otch, N*gga this, N*gga that....shows how little they have in the vocabulary department, and that they have nothing better to actually rap about.
5. Making threats about killing people or busting caps--honestly, if all them really have killed as many people as they say, trust me, they wouldn't have rap careers and be out of prison. Its all just hot air, a bunch of sissies that need guns to solve problems, like if you look at them wrong, or don't like them for some reason. They just act tough and talk the talk, I do really wonder if they can walk the walk. Using a gun and killing as an answer is primitive and lowly.
All in all, I've never been impressed with rap, they use simple beats, a couple of notes, and alot of bass. No complicated strings of melody, rythms(misspelled) or support instruments of any kind. Overall, I don't respect most rap artists.

To me, music is more about instruments than vocals.

Whoever told me to get my facts straight before i start yappin...
Don't get me started.
Garth Brooks has written maybe three of his songs (most likely the three least popular). All he has is performance. The powers that be in the music industry saw an opportunity to make a pretty penny off of a handsome guy with a good voice.
Also, please don't base talent or success on record sales. It is quite obvious that sales have nothing to do with talent (see our rap discussion above).
Now someone who puts Garth to shame that falls into a similar category...Vince Gill. Vince Gill is an AMAZING guitarist, writes all of his own music, and can play with other musicians and still flourish, something Garth was never able to do. Garth is a showpiece. Vince is a real musician.

k, simple things to state hear, non-debateable
1.) music is organized sound, so rap is music, and so is country.
2.) Country is creatively worse than rap music. Country songs have literally been done for centuries. The same chords over and over again.
3.)If you could copyright a chord progression, there would be no more Blues songs, except for 2-3 possibly. All songs use the same chord progressions, and they have for years upon years.
now my opinion:
Jurrasic 5 kicks ass.
They are not exceptions, they are just prime examples.
Music that is widely accepted and is "good" or "pleasant" music almost always tend to put the mind to rest.
THEREFORE
I am going to generalize and say that all popular music is basically the same because it's POPULAR, and because normal people do not like to listen to music that they have to actually think about and comprehend. they want 4/4 time and a beat they can tap their feet to.
With all that said, i would just like to say, dont hate.
youth is wasted on the young

1. I agree about the sirens and horns - it happened to me the other day and I was startled enough in my truck to start pulling over and nearly sideswiped someone coming up on the right at my blind side.
2. I am so many gererations removed from what ever is popular in today's music -
I know "Rap" isn't written for white old farts like me -
that said it is Not music - it is poetry but there's good and bad poetry.
4. I also don't like whinney country singers (mostly women sopranos with a cold), teenage angst songs (alternative rock?) whinney falseto guys with a cold -
almost all sopranos (female opera singers)
5. Now when pleasantly plastered I can enjoy playing country (played and record a few songs as back back when) polka, anything with a beat.
6. I grew up on big band swing, jazz and classical music (I prefer full orchestras).
My father was a professional musician al his life and used to put down anything not classical jazz or big band until he heard some of the country greats playing guitar riffs that would tax a symphony violinist.
In short good music is good.
In the old days of three cord wonders there some good simple songs. All lot of rock groups branched out and plwyed some really great music - think of Chicago & Moody Blues - Frank Zappa had some very wierd songs but the music behind him were the best studio musicians around and the music was as intricate as any Bach Sonata or Bethoven symphony.
Disco as a steady diet was horrible but when you wanted to dance there were some really good tunes.
Then what in the 90's - recording "artisits" counldn't come up with new tunes and riffs and had to "sample" old classic rock tunes and riffs?
And now the "artists" can't even come up with a melody anymore?
To each his own.
And each can pet his own peeve.

So many rock bands had southern or c&w influence and some had good jazz backgrounds too.
Now mix them all together.
Don't worry about age - that's why it's called Classic Rock.
Good Grief if Mick Jagger can still stut it on stage after almost 50 years -
Keith Richards has always looked that way -
