Looks like someone has been monkeying around with the VIN. Maybe etching over (obliterating?) a number that doesn't match the VIN plate in the windshield?

Maybe, but the wear is suspiciously ONLY on the VIN numbers. Too coincidental, but if she's a nice driveable Z, who cares. It'll be a long while before these cars are collectable enough to worry about "matching numbers."

No such thing as matching numbers there... it's got a 280Z engine and 5 speed tranny.
