Q:
anyone have any tips on how to tell what is the cause of over heating? I have a "new" car with about 50k on it. on the way home tonight the temp went almost all the way to H.
any tips on how to determine if the cause is a waterpump or a thermostat?

The waterpump will typicaly leak water out the front shaft seal or make a lot of noise if it is bad. Replace the thermostat and see if the overheating problem is solved, they are cheap and it is easy to do. *.* Also make sure that your fan is working.

yeah the fans seem to be working correctly which makes me think that its prob not a temp sensor issue... or at least they know when to turn on and off.

You can also check the thermostat in hot water to see if it opens. Most FSM or manuals explain the way to do it.
Once it's out it's about as easy to just put a new one in and see it's fixed or not.

It's a 54mm thermostat. Same as a small block chevy!
Drill a 2mm weep hole for bleeding air out when you fill it, and use a good Stant Superstat, in that you have an available temperature selection from 160 to 210 degrees F opening temperature
