A&Q about 350Z
Q:
I have a 72 240Z with a manual transmission that has a problem when starting off in first. As I let up the clutch the rear end begins jerking
forward and the transmission sort of shudders. If you push in the clutch when this happens and race the engine and release the clutch again it often clears up the jerking, or if I just go to second gear it is fine. This does not happen every time. A lot of the the time it goes from first ok. My mechanic changed the ujoint but it did not help. Any suggestions on what is causing this to happen?

More than likely it is the clutch. Especially when you mentioned that it does not do it with higher rpms. If you do go with a new clutch remember to have the flywheel turned and the rear main engine seal and pilot bearing (bushing) replaced. My money is on the clutch.

Do you have the stock 4 speed or did you put a five speed and leave the rear end stock?
My '73 will do this from time to time. 5 speed with 3.35 (stock rear). The clutch has been around a while and the gearing is a little to tall in first so it chatters like that when you take off from a stop.
If this is the case, take a look at the clutch, and or get a different rear end, like a 3.90 if you're using the early 5 spd. This would cure it.

Hi Gearhead,
Thanks for responding. The car is all stock except the wheels, 4 speed.
I have had it since 73. Two years ago the clutch had to be replaced.
Mechanic I go to put in one made by Napa. All was good until
recently when this problem started.

Hi JML77280Z,
Thanks for responding. The car is all stock except the wheels.
The clutch had to be replaced two years ago. Mechanic put in one
made by Napa. Could be something went wrong there.
Drove well until recently.

Hi CKelly78Z,
Thanks for responding. Not sure what that is, but a mechanic would.
Sounds like it would be not hard check and repair. I will bring this up
when I take the car it to my mechanic.
