If the batt. has lost its charge by just sitting, it can "sulfate" or lose the ability to take and hold a charge. But, my guess is that the batt. was on the way out before you put it in the trunk because I've had batts. that sat inside my basement and were fine - in fact, one sat for two yrs. and then went 11 1/2 (!) yrs. in the car.
Rusty but running.

And, now we are historic.

give that battery a good charging(12 hours at low amperage)i'll bet that its o.k.

Heat kills batts, storing them in a basement like started above is much better. Optima says to charge every 8 month to a year but to check it every 6 months and recharge it if it drops down to 12.4 volts. Is it hot where your at? If so your trunk could get very hot inside and if the batt was on it way out then that might be what happened.
Here is what they say about storage temperature:
Srorage informtion assumes an approximate average temperature of 77 degrees F. Higher temperatures will shorten battery storage time. To determine and approximate storage time you can make a estimate that for each 18 degrees F increase in average storage tempature, the time you can store your battery will be cut in half.
Remember, newer vehicles with on-board electronics such as computers, clocks, etc., require battery power to retain system memory while the vehicle is parked. If the vehicle is to be stored for long periods, you should charge the battery every two - three months or use a maintenance charger to compensate for the drain. A maintenance charger shoould be voltage regulated between 13.2 - 13.8 volts, 1 amp maximum. On older vehicles, without electronics, disconnect the battery cables whe the vehicle in not being used for extended periods.

Now you know!
What kind of voltage does it have now? Like said above slow charge it for a long time then check the voltage again.

Remember that a bad battery won't take a charge from a good alternator, and a good battery won't take a charge from a bad alternator. Check them both out at the local autoparts store.
