A&Q about 350Z
Q:
I just talked to a local mechanic and he was looking for a 5 speed to put into his 240SX. It's an auto now and he wants to convert it and he was wondering what vehicles he could take the 5 speed tranny and petals out of for the swap. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I told him just to buy the SR20DET with the tranny but he doesnt want to go that route just yet. So what vehicles should he keep his eye out for for the tranny??

Holy crap BLUE, thanks a million...and should the standard 5 speed pedal assembly also work or should that come from a 240SX?

I would go with the 240sx one. Some fab work may be needed in that area. I am not sure what nissan leaves out for automatics... you could get lucky and the clutch holes and pedal mounts may be under there.

The 200SX and truck trannys are stubby if I remember correctly.
Just find a 240SX 5 speed and rape it like BLUE had mentioned.
I do have a spare set of pedals and clutch master for the conversion. You will have to get a clutch line on your own if you want to buy my pedals. You will also need the boot for the shifter and get the DS from the 5 speed SX unless you will have a custom one made. PPL say to get the harness that plugs into the 5 speed but if you have a FSM on the car you can cut the auto harness and make your own 5 speed harness, it's not hard.

Thanks a ton guys, I'm going to see the guy later today, we just dropped of my sisters car to have it inspected and the guy there knew I was into Nissans so he asked me if I knew anything about the swap, I said not 100% but I know some guys who do... :) I'm glad hes around because I don't know any body around here that isnt just into putting loud exhaust on thier car and calling it custom, it will be nice to have somebody I can ask for help or info when I need it, the guys on this site are awesome but it doesnt help when I needs a hand pulling a motor...until I build my worm hole I'm kinda out of luck.

for the 240sx? Is he considering the SR20det swap? Will he mod the SR20DET if he puts it in or will he leave it stock? If he plans to do the SR conversion the SR tranny is not reliable under heavy use. If he plans to build the SR then he needs to cosider other options available in the market.
My son and I have done the swap and the first tranny held up under street use fairly well in stock form. That tranny puked shortly after we started to run it regularly at the track. The second SR tranny lasted a bit longer under heavy use as long as the car was used for Auto X and not the strip. Once we modified the SR the tranny caved in after only month of strip use. Either the syncros shattered or a gear cluster broke.
What we have decided to do is to go with a 94+ 300ZX TT tranny that will have a modifed bellhousing to bolt to the SR. This also necessitates a custom drive shaft. Those that are running this setup have not had a problem even under a lot of strip use.

He is planning on keeping the KA24DE for now, I told him that the SR is the way to go as a friend and I did the swap a few years back. We have the motor slightly modded and have had no tranny problems ...yet...It is a very fast car and it didn't cost much to get it to where it is now.
