This is just the beginning of this scam.
It continues with offers to pay with cashier's check; often substantially over the amount you want for a particular item. The difference between this cashier's check and the actual price being paid for the item is then to be sent to the buyer's buddy!
If you get a cashier's check from someone you don't already know and trust do, by all means, call the bank which is the issuer and check it out.
I sold some parts (not car parts) on ebay and got this experience. The cashier's check looked a little funny to me; there was no proper name and return address I ever got, nor a buyer's phone number.
I called the bank and sure enough, the so called "cashier's check" was completely bogus. Needless to say I never sent the parts.
