I ruined my radiator

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Well as the subject said i was showing off in my car to a fellow Z guy and i
reved her a little higher than i normally do, with this in mind i still never hit
redline. Any way it was only like a 15 min. drive and i reved the engine
enough to make the fan go into the radiator . luckily i was already pretty
close to home needless to say it made a mess when i got it home.
Before any one rags on my for going fast on public road i live out of town
and this was all done on a highway with very good visibility. All that said
let this e a warning to every one don't hot dog or you are made to look
like a fool.
On the plus side i have decided to run electric fans, because i have always felt that fan was a little close to the radiator.

hmm how did that go trough the rad ? did it come loose ?
ooh well time for an upgrade !
You can sleep in your car, but cant drive in your house
if you are fully in control, you are not driving fast enough!

Simply driving fast & reving won't send the fan through the radiator unless something else was already wrong.
Anyone can drive a new car.

All I can say is, glad you're alright.

Check your motor mounts, radiator mounts, and fan mounting bolts because that doesn't just happen without a failure of one.

A:

yea that just doesn't happen......ive taken my 260 to 6k rpms every time ive driven it......ive taken it to 7000 a dozen or so times and even to 7400 once.... and nothing of that nature happened

Not only can I barely decipher what you are saying but It is beyond me to understand how the fan blade could get into the radiator but even more so to think that anyone of mechanical knowledge and experience would think that revving an engine to its design criteria would think that would be the problem here.

A:

Exactly, now if you were revining the motor to oh say 13k rpms I can see the fan shooting off. But not 7k.

A:

Your viscous coupling is too viscous. It gouged your radiator because at high RPM it was spinning much faster than it should have been, and the blades bent forward.

okay, I am puzzled. someone clarify things for me, please.
1. was he driving when he was revving his motor?
2. how is revving your motor at highway speed supposed to impress someone?
3. why do people go out and do stupid things in cars and then post online giving advice to others warning them not to do stupid things?
If all were equal, none would be strong.

something had to come loose- theres just no way reving your motor will cause the fan to go into the radiator.

Trust me. Nothing is loose. Something is tight.

A:

Yup.

A:

damn you guys are harsh. if the fan was loose to begin with, or as stated in an earlier reply, other problems, revving the engine will most definitely throw it into the radiator. is this absolutely inconcievable to you guys or what? lol

A:

on my donor 280zxt, it had a radiator that the fan had gouged into. fan was still there too, and other than a few rough places on the edges of blades, it was OK. I can't imaging somebody would take a damaged radiator and put it into a good car. ?? The fan wasn't loose or anything.

You assholes are harsh.
A faulty waterpump or seized fan clutch can send the fan into the radiator....it has happend to MANY Z owners.

A:

I don't think a siezed fan clutch would do it. I had an 81 that a PO had welded the fan clutch together and it never hit the radiator. I'd be looking at the motor, tranny and radiator mounts real close.

OK to answer some questions and make a couple statements..
24ounce-wow that was very harsh for no reason. I mean a douche seriously that is just plain mean and I have done nothing to you.. I also never stated that this was a flaw in every Z.. So there is no need to flame me. I am not going to resort to name calling I just wish you would be a tad bit more friendly.
Diomedes is completely correct it was spinning to fast and bent forward and took a couple really good gashes into the radiator..
The radiator was an aftermarket radiator, i think i remember it being a little wider than the stock, and like i said i never really liked how close it sat to the radiator.
1. He was not driving
2. I wasnt just reving my engine just driving at much higher RPM's than normal
3. I unfortunately dont have the answer to this, maybe to feel like they are part of a community that likes to be informed :D.
Sorry it took so long to post again, I didnt think this thread would get very much attention let alone flaming?? Once again i am not blaming the car nor am i saying every Z has this problem.
