Q:
Hey,
The laptop caught a virus recently, so i formated the harddrive and tried re-installing XP. but got this error message:
I set it to boot from CD, Xp began to set up but then before the set up would proceed this message came up.
Ive also tried replacing the harddrive.
What could it be?
A:
broken
A:
boot sector virus btw

Hmm you've replaced the hard drive so that just about rules that out.
The CD is ok i guess.
I've had this before and the way i got round it was to creata a 2gb FAT partition and install XP into that. Then once it's installed i expanded the partition with Partition Magis. Then I converted the disk to NTFS.
Have you tried copying the XP install files onto the hard disk and installing it from there?
A:
Uncle's pc came up with that message last week, ran the chkdsk function on it and it worked fine. Not sure why replacing the hard drive causes the same message to appear, have you added any new hardware? (Besides swapping the disks over)

Nope, Its really being weird. I find it annoying after a while and just end up giving up. Theres a problem with CD drive aswell so im using a external to do all the installing.

I dont give me an option to run check disk, i havent added anything. All i know is that the cd drive is nackered so i use an external one to install everything.

Boot off the windows installation cd (needs to be set in the BIOS as the first bootable device) and then continue as if you are installing windows. Should detect there is already an installation on there and will ask if you want to repair it. Choose yes and the following prompts till you get to a command prompt styled screen. Whack 'chkdsk' in there and leave it, will scan the hard drive and fix any issues it finds hopefully sorting the problem.

Hiya, visit and run the memtest program. This will detect any errors with your memory. I work with computers and memory faults are quite common. If it finds errors then needless to say you need some new memory
Let us know how you go
