Building a MK2 Race Car

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Limited work tonight, managed to get the drivers seat bolted in using a universal bracket which is very average but least weight option.
Wheels and tyres arrive tomorrow, and will commence the suspension fit tomorrow night. Also get my work bench delivered, I have promised myself one for years, although always seem to have struggled through in the past without one!!
robin09 - GVK posted this regarding photos, and it worked fine for me.
To post pics you'll need to have them uploaded to a photo hosting site or webspace if you have it.
is free and simple to use, once the pics are uploaded
just add [ img ] your pic web addresss [ / img ] to your posts. ( without the spaces in the brackets )
Ideally pics need to be about 640x480 resolution for posting.
Photobucket generates the img code for each picture actually, just copy and paste into your message 'box'
mr hillclimber - you are very close with the spring rates, drop me a PM if you want to find out exactly. Although not a secret, i'd rather not publicise... a gentleman needs a few secrets!!! . Yes you are correct about limited engine mods.
iguana - Yes agree, coilovers are fairly well priced these days, obviously depending on what standard you go to!! Also suspension does not have to be modified for the race series, just depends how competitive you want to be!!
A:

Thought it would be around that, can tell by the coil size.
Pm sent.
A:

Out of curiosity how much are the Gaz shocks ?
A:

Barny - Drop me a PM
stephcasscar - Yes you are correct, spring rates also changed from standard. Have you fitted your kit, what do you think to it?
They look very good, springs about 300-350 front, 400-450 rear ? (I understand if you'd rather not say)

Your not far off fella, you've done this before
A:
888s for the bimmer e30 racers (same as 15" golf sizes) are about 40 somat quid a tyre....... unbeliveable price really...
Where and how can you get them at this price? Camskill are about £67 + extras.
A:

Thats a toyo supported price, you need to be a racecar in the series and buy a ltd no. of them from one particular dealer, but i think alex meant that if you're starting a race series up, it's worth going to the manufactors to try and get a supported tyre deal.
A:

Ah fair do's. Just a case of waiting and seeing what these regs will be like.
Either way I still need to fit all my safety gear to my Mk2 first, which should be fine for these series safety regs (I hope anyway).
CircuitStar - PM sent re: Gaz coilovers.
A:

Hope thats worked. Mk2 is now completely de-stickered. edit - even managed to get a sig pic, now i'm just showing off!

Good night tonight, made some real progress, and big thanks to Adam for his assistance! (promised him a mention )
Firstly, had a good tidy up and fitted the my new (secondhand) work bench and air compressor in place. Then down to business with the fitting of the suspension and new wheels. Apologies for the quality of the pictures they really are poor!! First picture shows the rear leg being fitted;-
Then some finished pictures, forgot to take anymore build pictures, but I am sure you have seen it all before:-
Basic setup completed regarding ride heights, will obviously need camber and tracking sorting out at later date. Although before goes out on the road it needs an MOT and Tax. Will also be interested in seeing how the R888's differ from the Toyo Proxis/ Yoko AVS and A539's I have run in the past on my MK1. Hopefully a marked difference!!
robin09 - Good to see pictures of your MK2, looks very clean, almost too good for the track!!
MK1 driver - PM replyed to. Will post regs as soon as available.
A:

Lookin good circuitstar. Lookin forward to seein how this race series will shape up!
A:

Wheels look good, are they 14's or 15's ? was thinking of a set in 14" for my Mk1 but put off a little by the problems a friend had with them.
A:

Yr MK2 looks good (and the R32's ok I spose !), whats the story with that one.
A:

Well, I've done a few trackdays in the R32, been to the Ring 3 times aswell. But after seeing all the Mk1/2s over there flying around, I thought it would be quite fun to get a dedicated track toy. Something cheap and cheerful that wouldnt matter too much if I binned it!
So myself and a friend saw this Mk2 for sale a little while ago. Already track prep'd, (which was good as we're novices), so we bought it between us. Its now road legal and we're looking to maybe do one or two track days this year, and hopefully this race series next year sounds very interesting. (And obviously plenty of Ring trips to follow!).
A:

mr hillclimber - wheels are 15 inch. Were your friends problems with the Team Dynamic rims?
robin09 - thanks, details of race series as soon as released!!
A:

I know the previous owner of the mk2 Robin09, Nick Molesworth!
I've been around Cadwell in it once or twice :)

Err... Yeah ! ... I can tell roughly by the wire size x the length, they look like about 8 or 9 inch ? got a few pairs from when I was experimenting with mine.

Looks good... Post up some pics and a spec in the members cars section (if you hav'nt already), I'm sure others would like to see it as well if they hav'nt here.

Yes his were.... sounds like it's a common thing ?
I'm looking for some 7x14 alloys, that sort of style, for my MK1. They must weigh no more than my P-slots (6kg's) and be a sensible price, 80-85 quid max. Dynamic's do such a rim and Revolution do a 7x14 RFX (both around the 6kg mark), what make yours then ?
A:

mr hillclimber - Mine are 7X15 Team Dynamics competition rims, think the model is Pro Race 1, they were a bargain through a friend, couldn't resist them. Also much lighter than my alternative, which is a pair of G60 winter wheels taken from my MK1.
Will post on the Member Motors Section, have few pictures of my previous MK1's and MK2's aswell. My first car was an original RHD 1979 MK1 GTi, bought it in early 1988 after my visit to the GTi International (think was the first ever show in 1987?).....old skool!!!! Remeber being blown away by a white MK1 GTi owned by a Greek chap, ran 15inch ATS Cups (best ever MK1 wheel), think it was either supercharged or on nitrous, and built by Steiner Engineering. Anyone remember the car??

Yeah, thats right.
He's a nice bloke, told him to get to the Ring next year in his 'estate'!
A:

His estate is a 'bit of a tool' isn't it?
A:

Chris - thanks for the links, looks as good as I remember it did!!
Further work tonight, although not really of the go faster nature. Removed the alarm that was causing few starting problems. Hoping to get few hours tomorrow night, that should see the central locking and electric windows removed. Also placed my order for a Momo 07 dished suede wheel, and a 6 line Goodridge flexible hose kit.
We now have a second car purchased to prepare, this belongs to Adam (the friend who helped me fit the suspension last wednesday). Its a white 1991 big bumper 16V, completely standard. Hopefully get some pictures later this week.
Should have some further news on the regs later this week, as promised will post a thread as soon as furher information available.
