Building a MK2 Race Car

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Oh cool rules out soon then
At abit of crossroads at the mo, obviously the rules are very important (and a big factor in considering doing this) but just thinking whether or not to leave it for a season and see how the first championship turns out. I would'nt want to do a season only to find out that there isn't going to be a second one.
A:

Chris - Yes and no. Yes the right car has come along at the right price, and it happens to be an 8V. Against that, I feel (and might be completely wrong on this) that the 16V class is going to be the most popular and hence very competitive. Therefore I would expect that will mean people spending money to extract the last ounce of power/ performance allowable within the regulations. I have no intention in spending many thousands of pounds to go racing!!
I am in this to enjoy the racing and mix with other like minded enthusiasts, I have no desire to be on the podium and not sure have the talent for that!! But on the other hand don't want to be stuck right at the back of the pack!!
I see the 8V route as being the way forward for me; (1) Hopefully competitive within 8V class as expect there to be fewer cars, (2) Get onto the grid for much reduced cost as managed to pick up a cheap 8V in right spec (3) Chance to do some 'giant killing' (pass a few higher powered 16V's).
AWK-53 - Nothing is certain, but if the series is popular there would be no reason not to continue. This is your chance to get into a series at the begining, one big advantage of that is there will be nobody established, nobody with several seasons development/ knowledge in this particular series. Please show your support!!
A:

Seems some good reasoning there Circuit Star. Again do you know if there are 2 classes?
A:

Tubthumped - Yes two individual classes, 8V and 16V.
A:

8v digi and 8v K-jet - which has most potential?
A:

Sounds promising, waiting for friday!
A:

8v K-Jet by a mile.
A:

The car purchased is a digifant 8V.
Would be interested in hearing any modifications you could suggest for engine, chassis, etc!! Preferably by PM
A:

Circuit star.
This all sounds really interesting, will you have a website with all the news on??
Keep us posted if you ever need to make the numbers up with Other VW's!! I have a corrado with all my old road saloon bits from my old golf Road Saloon... In need of racing!!

1, Convert back to K-jet.
A:

Circuit Star -- Once people know what is & what isn't allowed by the Regs...
you might get some Ideas

Are you just skim reading, or what? Clearly you are....
Standard valves, standard bottom ends, ?balanced? std rods.
Ban on special metering heads also, since they're silly money and not everyone will have one.
Then consider banning seam welding - akin to Road Saloon regs - since it's time/money.
In fact Road Saloon regs are the reference point here, but their internal engine mods are much greater & engine costs spiral, but Road Saloon refugee cars should be factored in for de-tune eligibility, since there are a few of them about.
Done.
2005 road saloon regs for your reference, .
Note suspension regs, and cage regs.
Idle thoughts on cheap mods that are easy to police
Suspension- all origial mounts must be used, coilover allowed but not remote res type (stops the mega bucks kit)
Standard mk2 wish bones & rear beam, spacers free
Suspension bushing free
Anti roll bars- free
Cage- no connection to front struts
Gear box, standard case, no lsd, ratios free
Panels all steel, all glass kept
Brakes 256 size & original calipers, disc & pad material free, brakes hoses free
Engine so many variables Id suggest no interal mods, must retain 16v k jet, all internal parts original size or largest vw overbore, standard KR cams flowed head allowed (most will do it sneakily anyway) ompression ratio free, stock manifold, manifold back free
Just idle thoughts anyway
Now, to ask again, seeing as you skim read this too:
Would it be possible for a bit more info such as:
- the background to the lauch of this series
- team experience/credentials
- MSA application progress etc?
- which race series it would be attached to
What organising club will this be run under?
I understood MSA needs regs submitted for club c'ships be end of Nov for ratification in Jan.
(Castle Combe tell me this anyhows on their saloon regs)
Be interesting to see how the eligible cars fit your c'ship.
I have a genuine 16v Scirocco for example which *might* or *Might not* fit your regs.
{saying this without any clue as to what your series is}

Rules gonna be posted tomorrow then Circuitstar
A:

My new 8V arrives tomorrow, and the 16V will return on the trailer, will post pictures of the 8V tomorrow. Then full speed ahead to get suspension fitted and car prepared for Bedford in 7 days time.. think will have my work cut out to meet that deadline!!!
Chris - Definitely not skim reading, was hoping the comment I made below (after the questions were asked originally) would cover all unanswered questions:-

Its difficult to answer many of your questions, without giving too much away. We want to get everything 'signed and sealed' with the relevant bodies before publishing.
The question I posted recently regarding ‘any suggested modifications’ related to MY car build, and not our regulations, apologies for not making that clear. But thanks for info anyway as useful reference!! I will PM yourself and badger5 with some answers.
Just returned from two nights away, will check my e-mail and hopefully have a finalised copy of the regulations to post. Thanks again for your patience.
A:

I'm assuming you've done your ARDS.
A:

Steved - No not complete ARDS licence, looking at doing that in Feb/ March 07.
A:

Rules available yet mate?
A:

Separate thread now started with for the race series:-
I will continue with this thread for the build of my race car.
Thanks for your patience!!
A:

I've done some text formatting of the regs - just to aid readabilty.
A:

Wondered how that had happened, thanks for that.
Also sent you PM answering questions.

As mentioned earlier this week, my new 8V arrived today. Just spent last few hours in garage taking stickers off and fitting new tailgate. First impressions are good, the car is not as mint as the 16V, but far nearer the specification for race series. Structurally good, paintwork reasonably good, although few scabs that need attention though.
Some of the work already complete by the previous owner will need to be revisited. Although most off that can wait until after Bedford Autodrome next saturday.
Main jobs over the next 6 days are to get the suspension and wheels fitted, change disks and pads at front and rear, tidy cage (repaint as very rough currently), will then have powder coated properly over winter. Remove plastic side windows and replace with glass items. Then a good general clean-up. I have my work cut-out as only few evenings available next week!!
Pictures taken this afternoon are attached below:-

A:

Looks ok... looking at the regs, surely the 16v was'nt a million miles off ?

Would have been OK as a trackcar, but felt the 16V could have done with an engine freshen-up and gearbox rebuild if to be used as race car. Then brake overhaul, poly bushes and goodridge hoses. Plus needed to fit front section to cage, plus door bars, nearly fell off my chair when SD wanted £370 inc Vat and delivery for those items!!!
Estimated all the above work would have cost fair few pounds to do properly. My 8V has had all that completed already by previous owners (know the last 3 personally!!), therefore 85% there and cost little more than the box standard 16V.
A:

Make sense.... Just thought yr 16v looked the part... you changing the wheels ?
A:

Yes, 16V went away as standard car. Wheels and suspension going onto the 8V, hopefully tomorrow (if get my finger out!!)
