A&Q about 350Z
Q:
Get yr finger out then !
Good to see the series does'nt start until July.... Plenty of time for people to get sorted.
A:
Further progress today, fitted supension and wheels from the 16V. Removed plastic rear side windows and continued to remove the sticker adhesive (what a job that was).
Also arranged to have a new tail pipe welded (in stainless) onto the backbox on wednesday. The current item is rather a large oval!!
Now looking slightly better for Bedford, although still a way to go. Will post further pictures within next day or so.
A:
Unless a miracle happens, the 8V will have to be trailered to Bedford, unfortunately the MOT ran out in June (only got documents tonight!!)
Collected new front disks/ pads and Goodridge hoses tonight. I am going to try EBC 'Greenstuff' until the series starts, then likely upgrade to Pagid Blue. Anyone got any recommendations on suitable pads for racing, although must not cost the earth??
A:
Ferodo DS3000, every time.
A:
Ferodo DS2500 or DS3000 (only a tenna more). About £70 for 256mm size.
A:
Thanks for the recommendation, will get a price for them.

NOOOOOO !!!!! DONT DO IT !!!
As already said here, start with some DS 3000's and maybe upgrade to the Pagid blue's (RS4-2's) if needed (though they'll be over twice the price).
Speak to this man.... Tim @ Circuit Supplies on 01525 385888, he's the main Ferodo comp agent in the uk.
A:
mr hillclimber - Thanks for the contact, will give Tim a call and have a chat with him.

If you are using that 8v, surely you need to fit small bumpers back onto it for it to remain legal?

or the tail lights, wheel arch trims and side trims to big bumper spec and just pretend
(although everyone know small bumpers cars are faster anyway)
A:
The key difference in my book is whether it is performance enhancing, which it isn't.
In a cost effective series, you use what trim you've got, and as long as the car is respectably turned out, it should make no difference.
Mechanics are another matter.
A:
No, but if you are bound to use original equipment for the model, especially aerodynamic bumpers and spoilers, id have thought it would need the original bumpers putting back on.
Just going on whats been said ref brake ducts, lower spoilers etc in the regs thread. And Andy, tail lights are correct.

AFAIK the tail lights are pre 90 spec? 90 spec are half tint at the top IIRC
A:
Dex it's a pre 1990 car so should be small bumpers and standard orange indicator lights. Unless it's a campaign, then it should have half smoked.
A:
Put the tail lights down, and step away!
A:
Have to agree with Chris here, Tail lights & Bumper type isn't really a performance issue as long as they was fitted to a MK2 GTI model...
Otherwise you end up with on going petty arguements like in the castle combes saloons over such things as the eligability of wings on a certain Audi...
If it were a mechanical issue, maybe a valid point but trim as long as OE on a mk2 GTI should be left alone imo.

i had to deal with the crap that spouted from them people
A:
I was right then. He would need to change the lights for it to be in 90 spec trim?
Probably not a good idea to have one of the demo car's for the series not complying with the regs...
A:
oops - just saw chris's post

That debate, aside from the front bumper which was rightly changed, was a load of cobblers, spouted by pedants who failed to see the point of the argument, or that there were two ways of achieving the end goal. The provision for wing extensions was totally legal whether S4 or off a Space Shuttle (though those that thought it was a Space Shuttle in pace weren't happy either ).
Anyway, such things shouldn't affect a series like this.
/off topic
A:
Keep up the good work guys, at this rate you`ll have all the eligibility issues ironed out well in advance of the series start plus an`optimum` vehicle spec

I have been rather busy the last few days getting the 8V ready for Bedford Autodrome, home from work and into the garage. Even managed a couple of early morning starts, hour in the garage then off to work……now that’s dedication for you!!!
Additionally, my workload was increased on Wednesday when got the documents through to the car and discovered the MOT had run out last July (the car had sat in sellers garage since then). Did feel at one point that this was not going to happen, and that my Passat Tdi was going to have to be the ‘weapon of choice!!’
Jobs completed over last 6 days include, swap old suspension for new Gaz kit (including new top mounts), front disk and pad change, refix my composite backed drivers seat, steering wheel replacement, and fixed in my 3 inch harnesses. Also replaced boot lid and bonnet, managed to get hold of second hand items in black, the originals were not in too bad condition, but some rust coming through. Also had a new back box manufactured in stainless (contact through a friend for £50), the previous item was not a subtle as wanted (5 inch oval!!). Now 2 inch round, although sounded much louder, and aware that noise regs are tight at Bedford (100 db static).
Then finally, clean adhesive from car following removal of stickers, and polished (Thanks Adam!!) Does not sound like much, but managed to take up most of my time between work and bed (although missed Wednesday as meeting for race committee)
Anyway you will be pleased to hear, car passed MOT on Friday afternoon at 5pm, and got it taxed for 5.20pm, so cut it rather fine.
Set off for Bedford yesterday morning at 6.30pm, met up with Matt (silver Elise) who lives about 5 miles away and drove there in the rain and wind, was hoping things would improve weather wise. The car felt good on the road, also noisy with an unforgiving ride, but better than my previous MK1. The turn in felt sharp, and the R888’s had more grip in the wet than I imagined. I had not had chance to do any set-up work, so the camber and tracking had not been touched since the suspension change.
Thankfully passed the noise test (only 94 db), signed in and met up with the other guys (10 of us had grouped booked). Real mixed bag of vehicles in our group, there were two MK1’s; my old 16V and another friends 2.0 litre 16V (did not do any laps as big misfire problems). There was an Elise, one E30 M3, one BMW 328i, an M5, a Peugeot 205 Gti, a 911 Carrera 2, and a full Clio cup car (actually won last years championship)
Anyway had an excellent day, the weather was terrible before lunch, at times I could have done with a set on monsoon tyres. Improved in the afternoon with a dry line beginning to form.
Car went brilliantly with only one problem, lost a split pin from the
gear linkage, managed to make simple repair and off I went. Pleased with the suspension, although did not really make any adjustments to damping as finding my feet (50% front and low setting at rear). Cannot wait to get on dry circuit, as think I will be even more impressed.
Pictures of car at end of day, picture quality not great as taken just before dark:-
My view on a couple of the points raised above:-
There should be no reason for me to have to change bumpers. Yes the bumpers are not correct for the year of the car (Aug ’89), but they are a standard VW item and in no way are they performance enhancing (would not have thought the improved aero dynamics would make any difference).
Additionally, we have discussed brake ducting at our last meeting, and decided that NO ducting will be allowed, standard or not.
When this car is used for promotion of the regulations it WILL comply with the regulations, and that will be with either small or large bumpers, and smoked or unsmoked rear lights.
Thanks for your support!!!
