Any 1 had problems with Castrol Magnatec

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Its been in the car for 2 trackdays now and both times the oil buzzer has intermitently come on. (just twice yesterday and only when trundling through the pits after a session on track)
The buzzer only sounds when the oil temp hits 106 (i know they are all different but that really is as hot as my oil gets, even in summer)
Also after every session (5 laps a time at Silverstone yesterday) it was so tappety that it sounded like a diesel Leave it for an hour let the oil cool down and it returns to its normal smooth self.
I must have done about 50 laps yesterday so if it was a pressure problem it would never have coped.
It never comes up on the road, but then I dont really hoon it on the road.
All I can think is that its the magnatec, as its the only thing thats changed?
PS - I have changed both the oil pressure senders, and the pump is fairly new, and the oil level is Ok, and the dipstick tube is not broken so I know its got the right amount of oil in it. (usual suspects eliminated )
A:

what grade oil are you using and for what engine?
A:

Magnatec is crap. I wouldnt even kill weeds with the stuff!
A:

Magnatec is crap. I wouldnt even kill weeds with the stuff! I agree, utter sh@* . I used it in my old Audi 90 quattro, and the engine just drunk it. Also it didn't run as smooth as with other oils I used. I'd say change it straight away, and if your engines done a few miles don't go for anything to thin or fully synthetic.

15/40 in a 89 Valver
Schoolboy error noted
A:

My 8v hated the stuff so it's left on the shelf for other people to waste money on now
A:

Castrol is utter pish, everything i have ever put it into has drunk it at alarming speed.
A:

Comments noted!
It was the only 15/40 stuff I could quickly get hold of at the time - will change it before the next track day!
Cheers all
A:

so what oil would you all recommend for a 91 8V now that you have worried me about Magnatec??
A:

so what oil would you all recommend for a 91 8V now that you have worried me about Magnatec?? Synta Silver semi-synth - available from your friendly VW dealership or GSF for just under 20 notes.
A:

could it not just be to lack of baffling in the sump...my oil buzzer comes on if i go round a roundabout at a great speed. lol
A:

Castrol haven't made a good oil since the 60's.

It's most likely a foaming problem, the oil gets too much air in it and wont create enough pressure.
A:

running Millers XSS semi-syn 10w40 in my modded 8v Digi. does not go above 112 when driving hard.
A:

I always use silver synta in my road golf and the track golf. I've never had a problem in either.

Dont think its oil surge, exact conditions are as follows - trackday, say five laps of the track at full pelt, come into the pits at low revs, say 1-2K and the buzzer goes off for a second
Also after a session on track the Tappets also go all noisy. Turn the car off, start it half an hour later and all is fine.
I think Golden has hit the nail on the head, that would explain why it never happens on the road, what grade is Synta? my old girl runs much smoother on 15/40
Hope this malarky hasnt knackered my engine
A:

i run my mk3 1.4 with BP vanellus oil, never gave any trouble no sensor lights no nothing ever went on, and i mean i punish her every weekend at the drag while having some fun with my mates, also back on my way home if traffic permits, 3/4 of the trip is done in 3rd at abt 100-120km it some times makes a bit of a smell but i think that is because tempreture oils gues a bit up , but the engine keeps working perfect on idle and at full trothle... trying to find someone who imports syntha if you guys say that its her natural blood.

i wonder why some oils are burnt faster than others?
im sure that when mine has millers it burns almost nothing. when using car lube it burns about 1litre per 1000 miles. car lube stuff is dead cheap tho. im replacing the rocker cover gasket with the next change anyway... so that may solve another issue

Now i wonder if it's a coincidence the figure you've quoted there.
Using Comma semi synth, my golf burns so little that it doesn't need topping up between 5k services, but using castrol it uses 1 litre per 1000 miles.
I see zee pattern emerging 'ere!
A:

basically bang on 1000m for 1 litre. i brought car lube as a 'top up' oil, but the millers that i originally put inthe tank lasted ages.
ive just gone and brought 10 litres of car lube 5w-40 fully synth... so hopefully it doesnt just cane all that too lol
A:

ive just gone and brought 10 litres of car lube 5w-40 fully synth... so hopefully it doesnt just cane all that too lol Matt, if your'e car has done loads of miles it's gonna p@*s through a 5w/40 oil in no time. When the engine is cold it is at it's most slack, and this is when it will drink most of the oil. 5w is way to thin for a high miler.
A:

see mine does not do a lot of short trip, just 2*30 miles a day.
i can see your logic, but i wanted 5w in there over winter due to how cold it gets and how thick that leaves 10w.
time will tell. a new rocker cover gasket is going on, so that may reduce its drink problem.
as for high miler... im sure that if it was 'slack' it would be lacking compression and wouldnt be making 170+bhp at stealth ?
A:

Nah, it may well have a good ring seal, but loose bearings...........
A:

and will loose bearings pish away my 5w oil in a quick fast and in a hurry?
A:

No, bearings won't lose oil, it just goes back into the sump.......... if you buy cheap oil, it breaks down faster. So your 10w40 will become 10w20 faster. Hence the oil burning.
Better oils have higher quality viscosity enhancers, which last longer and hold the "stated" oil viscosity for longer.
I'[ve been ranting on here for years about Castrol's own brand oils, as have many others...... basically it is pish. If it is an oil BLENDED by Castrol to VW, BMW etc. spec, then they are given a recipe and told to blend it. That is fine, no problem.
But their own Magnatec is hardly worthy of oiling a padlock - waste of a good padlock IMO.

Incidentally, i used magnatec on an oil change on my last 94k mile GTI, the head gasket blew within the month - make of that what you will.
