Polycarbonate Windows.

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Surely a simple solution would be to put regular scratch resistant window film/tint on them ?
A:

Aiii !! Tintin'
A:

Are you using the original rubbers?
A:

flexi glass ia a arcylic but has a harder surface that doesnt scratch as much as perspex for instance. ive spent ages cleaning the windows on the mk5 race cars covered im mud etc (mikes always on the grass), they have havent scratched at all, just using a auto glym window/perspex cleaner im impressed with them recomended.Plexi-Glass is just another manafacturer of cast acrylic. as far as i know flexi glass is different from Plexi-Glass. 4mm is what you need to fit into rubbers as normal glass is about 3mm. i think 5mm plastic is 2much
A:

I had a think about this & i think i came up with a way of fitting one as thin as you like & still have the rubbers but it is a bit time consuming.
A:

4mm is the minimum for racing i think

A:

Chris i will ring round my suppliers and find out who the cheapist is. a local specialist might be cheaper due to size and postal costs of a 8x4 sheet, ill let you know.
Im planning to do mine in a green tinted ici arylic next so it looks like campaign glass in my mk1, trying to keep a original factory look.
Also if your doing a mk4 golf onwards you really need to get them moulded to the shape of the window,s this is done in a heat process, a bit like vacuum forming i think, a specialist job havent tried it yet. mk1 2 3's can be done with flat cut panels.
The best advantage for plastic windows apart from the saftey factor is lowering the roll centre of the car
A:

re: a sample Chris I can sort something out next week. I just got word today I start back in the plastics company on Monday.

I thought plastic could be more dangerous than glass as the window would dice up on impact but the plastic wouldn't?
A:

I think thats the whole idea of perspex/polycarb, ie no glass coming into the car as a saftey factor, the last thing you want is glass in your eyes. I have hit mine with a hammer and it hasnt cracked! Nearly every motorsport car has them instead of glass so they cant be more dangerous, if any thing the plastic window would pop out on a huge impact if they are bonded in or sat in the rubbers. I saw claire tippets mk1 have a huge shunt in the rear, the window just poped out and landed on the grass rather than sending shards of glass in to the cockpit. i hope this helps. if anyone knows more please post
A:

I am more for plastic but i just mention it because of what we normaly think of as plastic, has the plastic ever split in bad crashes? (like the old style original glass windows where they could end up as shards).
A:

plastics just tend to crack rather than splinter etc
A:

How does the different types of plastic compare or do all motorsport try to stick to certain ones?
A:

could you give me a shout on availability for 4mm green. not sure on sizes needed but i need enough to do the 5 windows on a mk1 golf without using any rubbers. fed up hanging about waiting on this other company getting these done.
if need be i'll get some measurements at the weekend.
A:

Send me some measurements pol if you can. I've started back in the plastics company yesterday and intended to pop my windows out some time to get exact measurements but if anyone already has them that would be a big help. Email:
Mike, as far as I know it's only polycarbonate that is used throughout the motorsport world mainly for it's strength and fire rating. PC has such a strong molecular bond that nothing else really compares in terms of weight, durability and strength etc.
I've just send some samples to Chris of another material I'd be keen to try in windows. Hope he'll post up his findings after doing a few tests.
Pascal, I've tried to smash PC in various forms many a time and only managed to break it when I bended it back on itself (2mm). Infact I have a police riot truncheon at home also made of PC and I'd gladly give £100 to anyone who could break it with their own hands or by hitting it off something.
I also have a PC mirror in my bathroom that falls down into the sink or bath on a daily basis and it just won't break!!

i got a quote for a mk1 that we have at work, the company was in the ppc magazine forget the name they wanted £250 delivered for clear windows with both the fronts having sliders that doesnt include a screen by the way
A:

had a thought on this earlier after posting. i spend a bit of time making templates of all the glass in a mk1 and also make templates for 1 piece fronts and for windows with no rubbers. you could then use these for any future sets you make. thoughts?
A:

How do you usually secure them without the rubbers & make them as waterproof?
A:

you rivet them and seal with with a clear silicon. what sort of measurments do u need
A:

Hey guys and girls,
I have made perspex rear and side windows and polycarb front side windows for my mk1 recently. I used the rubbers to hold the rear and side windows and for the full front side windows i used the rubbers which i modified plus sikaflex sealent (used in the marine industry) in black to hold the polycarb in place. Two track days down and they were fine.
As has been said in this post for motorsport you need 4 mm min, i belive for use in rally there has to be a british standard kite mark on the plastic to get past Scrutineering. ( i will check this tomorrow as the loal rally is on this weekend and i am attending Scrutineering to sign on) I heard of perpex splitting and going sitright into a drivers face before which is why i went with polycarb on the front side windows.
I have cut out some squares for when i finally get round to making or buying some slider kits.
I found that the rear side windows which are slightly curved on a mk1 need a bit of sikaflex sealent to hold them in place. (don't want them flying out when i was hitting a ton on the la mans stright!!)
If anyone wants some piccies i can get some of the windows fitted.
Hope this is of hope to you guys.

I've just measured (roughly) the size of the windows in my Mk2 5dr.
1 no. 1200x500 - rear window
2no. 880x450 - rear side
2no. 700x450 - front side.
As I said they are rough square measurements.
From a full sheet 3mx2m of Margard, you will get 2 full sets plus an additional rear screen or sliders for them both.
If anyone has a scale drawing (long shot I know...) of the windows they could send me that would be a great help. Otherwise I'm going to have to pop out my windows to make a template and buy a full set of some 3Dr windows to do the same. That would give me templates for the Mk2 but I'd still need to do the same for the Mk1.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to get templates for these without going to the expense of buying them first? I don't want to heve to be going to buy windows everytime someone wants a set fro something other than a MK1 or Mk2 golf.
I'm still trying to work out whether it's going to be viable to start producing these for people.
cheers
Phil.
A:

How much are they usually for a mk1?
A:

phil i'll send you a pm later tonight on this....
A:

excellent pol,
cheers.
