Idiots guide to simple ICE install

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Can anyone point me in the direction of a simple, beginners tutorial on in-car audio?
Basically, I've upgraded the component speakers in my Mk2 GTI and I'm in the process of sourcing a decent head unit, but I've been told an amp will get the best out of the system. Basically I need to know exactly how these things are connected up and what I'll need.
Any help would be appreciated!

you have a power cable running direct from the battery, thru the bulkhead to the amp. Get a head unit with RCA outputs on the back. join these from the head to the amp. you then run speaker cables from the amp to the speakers. So you need the amp, the headunit, the speakers and a wiring kit.

this forum is a bit techy but if you ask on there and tell them what you've got and want there's usually someone helpfulenough tosort you out.

you will need to run a power cable from the battery(8AWG), i sudjest taking the front carpet up, in the passangers footwell there is a grommet, push the cable throught there and it will come out in the engin bay (no drilling), lay the powercable behind the carpet, and down the left hand side of the car, either in the boot or the engine bay you need to put a fuse, think im using either a 20 or 30 amp fuse, il check when i get home if you would like
you will need to get a headunit with phono out sockets, then run a twin phono cable, preferbly gold plated, fron the boot, down the right hand side of the vehicle, under carpets again for a good final look, behind the fusebox, under the dash and up into the space for the stero, i ran mine through the brackets that hold the dial's, also run anouther cable, about 24X0.3 with the twin phoneo cable.
find a sutable grounding point on the car, i have used the rear seatbelt fixings, and anouther length of 8AWG cable.
and the rest is pretty simply laid out on the amp, power is your red from the battery, remote is the small cable from behind the head unit, twin phono is pretty self explanitory and the depending on what amp you get the rest will be different, but its will only be runing oxygen free copper cable to your speakers.
so parts list
1M Brown / Black 8AWG cable
6M Red 8AWG cable (you could prob get away with 5 but i got 6 because i dont know where im puting my amp yet)
5M Twin Phono Lead
5M 24X0.3 cable
Fuseholder
Fuses
all readerly avalibe from maplins :)

Wow, what a brilliant response! Thanks guys!
Just had a look under my boot carpet and there's already a bunch of cables coming through into the boot, so it looks like there may have been some kind of install there already!
I'll speak to the dude who sold me the car and find out how much of the instructions above he's already done, might save me some work...
Thanks again, you guys are wicked.
