Q:
Hi All
I'm sick of my rubbish H&R rear springs, so it's time to go back to standard boingy ones to help me survive the miriad speed bumps in Nottingham!
Has anyone got access to ETKA and can tell me what the part code is for either a single or pair of the standard rear springs for a Mk2 16v Golf, please?
On a spring-related note, a friend recently bought some new springs for his a 2l 16v Mk3, but found that the part VAG sold him were considerably longer than he expected, leaving the car sitting really high. After some research he discovered that VAG had substituted the part code a few years back, so while they were definately different, they were still the correct official VAG part for the job.
Does anyone know if VAG have a habit of changing parts like this, and if there is any info out there on Mk2 16v rear springs
Cheers

191 511 115E Two door Golf engine code KR, PL rear springs.
A:
nice one
How come its specific to the 2 door?
A:
I assume it's the extra weight of two more door shells, glass, window mechs, locks etc.
A:
4 door springs are 191 511 115F
A:
top stuff, cheers

Do you reckon I'd be bananas to fit the 4 door ones?
I'm half tempted, given that currently i can't have more than 1 skinny rear passenger before the standard 185x60/R14 tyres rub on the arches - and that's with boge turbo gas shocks and all new bushes fitted 6 months ago (did it from first fitting sadly ).
A:
At worst it might raise the rear ride a height a bit and given most people think the Golf looks like its got a saggy ass as standard it may well be ok.

gotta be something up with the rear suspension if it rubs with a skinny person in the back. I had a 40mm drop on my 8v and had no trouble with a couple of fat people in the back! Thats with ET24 7j wheels on it too...
The 16v springs will be 10mm higher than my car, so you shouln't have any trouble at all. Just make sure you replace the rubber top plates & bump stops if they're knackered.
Edit: Golden, you ever going to take these driveshafts out of my garage

I had pretty much all of the chassis bushes, the dampers and springs (and engine mounts!) replaced by Stealth in April, who also did a 4 wheel alignment for me saying that it was a very straight rear axle "better than some new ones!" - hence I was pretty miffed that it didn't drive like a new car
At the time of the original fitting, Stealth said that they would fit new bump stops, but with the combination of boge turbo gas dampers and H&R springs (that they have used plenty of times before for people), they usually have to cut down the bump stops, to which I agreed on their advice. So they are new (or bloody well should be!) but probably need replacing too I guess. The top mounts should have also been done, but I won't know for sure until he springs and dampers get removed - I don't mind admitting that I'm a bit suspicious to be honest.
Maybe the wrong rear springs were sent, given how out of kilter the car looks
I have a slight dent on my NSR arch (hidden by the plastic trim) that did rub a little, but I had that rolled back by a local bodyshop after Vince pointed it out.
I was recently in Hertford and had a guy called Colin Gunning replace a manky rear caliper for me which failed an MOT. After a chat he suggested that I could probably get away with standard rear springs while keeping the H&R front springs. Although I pointed out that it might mean the car was a bit unbalanced (as Vince had said to me when I asked him about this), Colin agreed that the back did look excessively low compared to the front and I should probably at least try it to see if the H&R springs were to blame for the low ride.
So, jump forward to today: I've just ordered a pair of 191 511 115 F (5 door) springs from my local VAG parts dept
Lets see what happens!!
Here's a standard Mk2 16v with 14inch Montreal wheels:
Here's my sick golfy looking saggy, although not a million miles from the standard one above. I put the Montreals back on to give it a lighter feel... (excuse the fuzzy pic):
Here's whay my golfy looked like a few years ago with 15inch BBS RAs shod in 195x50/R15 rubber - Ideally it'll look like this again soon! This pic is circa 2004 and was on the factory springs and dampers (it had about 85k miles on it then)

The rear on yours is lower than my mk2 8v on a 40mm drop, that looks more like 60mm+!
Must have the wrong springs on there, this is how mine looks:
A:
Bah, yours looks great!
I reckon mine looks all the more crazy for having a standard looking front end...
I think I might argue the toss over it with Stealth once I've had some VAG springs fitted, presuming it fixes the problem. I'm in Nottingham and they're nearer Brum, so I can't really nip over and have a chat about it. Maybe armed with some photos I might have a better chance of squeezing some kind of refund out of them for part of the job
Ho hum!
A:
one look at that photo and they should know it aint a 40mm drop at the back
hard part is proving the photo wasn't taken with a ton of bricks in the boot
Maybe your boot carpets are lead lined
