suspension question

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

hey new to this site, i own a 150 gt tdi mk4 golf.
i recently put some 18'' alloys on it and then lowered it 40mm and for some reason there was banging coming from the rear end of the car??
is this normal? what do you think, may it be the wheels being too big?
also ide like to ask if the anniversary suspension is the same as mine??
plz help, steve
also ide like to know any other things that i should look out for on these cars?
A:

18s is no prob on tdi, even lowered
Might be bottoming out on hard bumps?
Anni suspension maybe lower than gti spec too, but not sure
What sort of things do you want to know about? things that poss go wrong?
Welcome to the forum btw.

hey thankx for the reply and sorry for posting in thw wrong section.
i just thought by lowering 40mm that it wouldnt bang or bottom out??
my son has a polo on coilovers really low about 90mm and his doesnt bottom out or bang from the rear?
A:

The mk4 has much scope for lowering and 40mm really isnt much tbh. Many collie users are down to 70mm+
Main problems occur from Arb to driveshaft contact.
The polo is a different beast, so anything is possible there.
Exaclty when does the noise occur? Could it be fitted incorrectly?
A:

its just over bumps, seems very hard on the rear end?
maybe its because the tyres are very low profile and im a old git.
A:

dont forget, when you make such changes, you wave bye to all that comfortable floaty nonsense the mk4s known for! From now on expect crash and bang on every undulation!
A:

I had this on my MK4, turned out that the rear beam / axle bushes were shot, at only 50,000 miles. Bigger wheels will wear them out even quicker!
