A&Q about 350Z
Q:
Hi, my front rear right engine mount (gear box) is lose, a mate of mine who does all my messy work on the car had a look at it today, from under neath he can lift the gear box up wards from using a large screw driver, but the top bolt going through is solid and tight!
As he has not done one of these on a golf for a few years he wanted me to post this to see what may need changing, could it just be a broken mount or is the thread gone inside? or something else?
An exploded diagram would be great (big ask i know)
Any advise most appreciated

hi mate the gearbox mount on my '88 digifant gti has a large bolt through the top (17mm) and two small bolts holding the mount down onto the chassis which can be a pain to get too.
do a search and you will find threads on this.
I had to loosen the top bolt on the front engine as i have a solid item and then after supporting the g'box and undoing said 17mm and 13mm bolts, jack the gearbox up- not too much to stress everything...TBH i didnt stop lacking till the gearbox fouled the underside of the chassis leg. the mount should then...from underneath the car...lift up out of its 'cup' it is located in. you may not have clearance and will want to unbolt a large metal casting which two of the gear linkages bolt to..it is not the large metal flat type bracket but the one to the left which has 3-4 bolts in you need to be under the car to under 1 or 2 of them but above for the rest then you can slighty move this casting for more clearance (as its still conected by the gear linkages to the car) and hey presto you will have enough clearance just wiggle like hell and pop it out eventually...
good luck

The bolt goes through a bushing that is bonded to the rubber making up the actual engine mount.
Most likely the bonding has let go (wouldn't be the first that happened on a Golf ) - so the bolt will still be tight on the bushing, but since the bushing isn't holding on to anything, it just flubbers around.
Below is a picture of mine when I changed it on my club rally car - I couldn't shift gears when going around very tight turns since the whole engine/gearbox assembly was over to one side, so the lengths of the rods were messed up.
I replaced it with a hand/homemade bushing out of nylon (I have a lathe - nice tool for the garage bodger) - wouldn't recommend it for daily driving, but boy did it help :-).

New mount - not too much of a hazzle to change in my opinion. You need to undo the gearbox support though.

Thanks so much guyz! I'll get him on the job next week!
Yes same thing happens to me with the gear change, sometimes 1st is hard to engage, but if i hit the brakes hard when coming to a stop the gear change is as it should be!
