top mounts! argh!

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

right the ive got myself a bit of a dilemma.
My cars just failed its mot on lots of things! including insecure front suspension strut, there is a wee bit of move ment and i thought it would be the top mount bolts. To my horror i looked under the to mount covers this morning to find the metal plates were about 15mm off the car like the suspension is trying to come up throught the car.
Im guessing this isnt right, its lowerd 60mm on standard top mounts, is this where the problem lies? if so which ones should i buy and will i be able to get them of the shelf any where today? im well stuck here any help would be good.

I'm gessing you are talking about the gap in between metal cups and rubber below
If you are than dont worry that's normal
Maybe bearings a knackered within top mounts
A:

Yes im talking bout that gap, it just dosent look to good! The car failed its mot because theres play in the suspension struts, is there any way to get rid of the play?
A:

new mounts have play...its down to the testers discresion if its worn ot not
A:

hmm do i just plead with the tester the? he did seem a bit inbred and he had no teeth!
A:

If you undo the top nut there is another one underneath (do it with the car on the ground) which requires a special tool to tighten (5 or 10 quid). If this is already tight then the top rubber mount is probably worn. You would have to remove the strut to check this.

I have the same problem, Bought new Weitec 40mm drop kit (struts and springs) with new gen top mounts and even bought the slotted nut tool from gsf. I have now a 7mm gap from the top metal cap and mount. Any ideas anyone?
Taking it to get camber done and tracking next week as i also installed poly bushes all round.

hmm do i just plead with the tester the? he did seem a bit inbred and he had no teeth! take it to a proper garage!!!!
A:

you will find on the old cars that when jacked up they will sometimes fall down and move about, if the tester isn't familiar with VW then he won't know about this and will fail it for to much play, on that tho it could be worn and requires new bearings.
try taking it to a garage that deals and works on vw's

thanks guys, its got its retest tomorrow-there was a load of other stuff wrong with it. ill have a word with the tester, i dont want to go anywhere else 'cos ill have to pay the full fee again. Ill let ya'all know what happens!
A:

well took it for the retest i explained the top mount system to him, so a sierious fail turned into nothing, but he found another advisory! after ive driven it one mile! i wont be taking it back there! thanks for the help
