Mk1/Mk2 Cab PAS clarification?

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Hi guys and gals.
I'm after clarification as to what is avaiable/ can be modified in terms of PAS on Pre Mk3 Golfs.
Up until a couple of years ago I owned a lovely unmolested '84 GTi. It was undoubtedly the best car I've ever owned, but it had to go as without PAS my other half just couldn't manouver it. We've been talking recently about me getting rid of my Sharan, and getting a 'Mk2' convertible as a daily driver. Now I believe that Mk2 age 'verts were actually based on Mk1 chassis, but this is far from my area of expertise. Having read through much of the very useful info on here, I'm still a little unsure as to what is available or can/can't be done to a convertible golf from the Mk2 era.
Any pointers or info would be very gratefully recieved.
Cheers,
Nige

Cheers Chris. I've been through this thread several times, but the two things that I'm still not 100% on are -
Should all pre Mk3 convertibles be taken as Mk1 golfs a far as chassis and PAS is concerned?
Did the 'Mk2' golf convertible ever come with PAS from factory?
Sorry, I should probably have mad that a bit clearer :-)
Cheers,

Should all pre Mk3 convertibles be taken as Mk1 golfs a far as chassis and PAS is concerned? Essentially yes. Wishbones, rear beam, struts etc - all the same.
Did the 'Mk2' golf convertible ever come with PAS from factory? Only in LHD format, never RHD - but see the UK VW-dealer endorsed after-sale RHD PAS fitment mentioned in FAQ thread.
Does this answer? Any more Qs?
A:

Nice one, Chris, that pretty much covers it.
So, when I'm looking at 'Mk2' verts, they'll only have PAS if they've been converted or if they're LHD. Ooh, that makes me think of another Q. Do y ou know when LHD 'verts got PAS?
Cheers,

There wasn't a MK2 cab produced, more like a 1.5, i.e. same chassis but with a different bumper kit & grill to update the look. The same is true with MK3 Cabs, the facelift model is known as the MK3.5, its the same chassis but with MK4 touches to update the look

rubjonny's right, but I think you're just referring to them (Mk1/Mk2) for identity. Worth mentioning that the fuel tank (& floorpan) is different on the "Mk2".
As you say, any PAS RHD Mk1 Cabrio of any sort, dating from inception ?1980? to presumably ?1993-ish? has been converted. Nothing on this PAS kit originates from German production lines.
The CitiGolf (non-Cabrio) model which is essentially an updated Mk1 Golf produced in South Africa still does not have PAS.
I'm not sure when the LHD Mk1 Cabrios (all Mk1 & Mk2 as you put it) got PAS - but I have a microfiche for around the '82/'83 model year which shows PAS on LHD. This LHD PAS kit cannot, for obvious reasons, be reversed for RHD (though I would be very interested to get sight of one - it's some time since I looked at a Euro car with PAS at Inters).

TSR used to supply the RHD PAS kits, but they've gone under. However news from the grapevine suggests they may re-open soon under new ownership...
A:

TSR supplied "a" kit, not "the" VAG-dealer endorsed Motability-based kit - see FAQ link above.
Due to TSR £1k price tag, sales were thin, and the re-birth of TSR would be unlikely to see such a marginal product being rekindled.
