A&Q about 350Z
Q:
right then guys, ive just bought some new pads for my car, and ive come across a problem, the caliper retaining bolts are rounded....is there ANY way to get them off as i am in desperate need for a pad change..!!!!
Thanks.
Dave
A:
You could try using a stud extractor.
A:
depends what brakes, on 280s i used to unbolt the carrier and leave the allen head stuff alone,
A:
hammer in a spline/torx socket or get a nut welded on
A:
my mate done that on his 16v brakes, ended up using mole grips, wd40 and about 4 hours!!!!! try welding on a bar or something to gte it off, there is no easy way but it will budge dude
A:
Mole grips, you will need to cut off the rubber sleeve that protects the end of the bolts (supposedly to stop them rusting and rounding off)
Failing that apply a bit of heat with a blow lamp but avoid the brake lines/rubber boots etc

Is this the front 17mm bolts or the rear allen headed things?
Two of my fronts were rounded off and i ended up just hammering a 16mm over them until it was RIGHT on. AS for the rear allen headed ones, i ended up chiseling one of them off.
A:
Friend of mine had the same problem, We end up using a Dremel and a chisel. Took a while to get them off, but better than having a lose caliper!!!! lol
A:
Undo the bottom bolt first as then there will be movement in the calliper/carrier to start undoing the top bolt and can make the top one a lot easier to undo by swinging the calliper/carrier to help undo it.

thats what i did, couldnt think how to explain it tho, so went for the easy option
A:
its easier said than done! as both have rounded off! :(
A:
Hammer a 16mm socket over it then (if it's the fronts)
A:
Cheers Bundles, ill try it tomorrow!!!! if that fails ill try and get mole grips on it.
Many thanks guys!!!!

Like i say, it's what i had to do to my fronts as they were already rounded off when i went to take them out. it takes a good few cracks with the hammer to get them all the way on, but make sure they ARE all the way on or they will just round off again. Then you're left with the problem of getting the 17mm bolts out of a 16mm socket

I have a good method for removing nuts stock in sockets
Put a large drift in the back of the socket, small enough to go through the hole but large enough to hit the nut and not bend, hold the socket in your hand and bash the end of the drift on the floor. If that dont work put the socket in a vice and hammer the drift. Works every time
A:
worht checking your socket....I had rounded mine with my 12 poitn socket, but they came off fine with a brand new 6 point socket (I was suprised, they looked caned to me)
A:
I use my set of surface drive sockets for the stubborn rounded off bolts. They undo bolts that any normal socket would just sit and spin on all day long.
