A&Q about 350Z
Q:
The fan on my mk2 8v keeps blowing the fuse. I can turn the ignition on and use the fan on all 3 settings, everything working normally, but only shortly after putting a new fuse in place. But then i can be driving along, without the fan on and the fuse pops (i can hear it go). The fuse has also gone while using the fan, changing the speed settings and also the direction the air goes, so there seems to be no real pattern other than it seems to work just after replacing the fuse.
i have replaced the fan switch, but still the problem persists. im pretty sure it requires a 20amp fuse, which is what i have been using.
Any ideas, i need the blower to work now as winter is setting in
cheers

It sounds like a problem with the motor it self to me. It sounds to me like whenever you are changing the load on the motor it's causing a current spike somehow and blowing the fuse.
My old rocco used to do this with the rear screen heater, in the end i tried a 5amp higher rated fuse guessing that the wire rating : fuse rating would have some safety margin in it and knowing VW it would be a huge safety margin, turned it on and listened and sniffed for the slightest burning wire smell, no smell, no fuse going bang and no more problems after that.

I had a similar problem and it was caused by a loose wire touching the metal cage of my stereo as my stereo is wired into the heater fan motor

That can cause noise from the "dirty" signal generated by the heater motor btw mate.

is it a complicated circit that connects the components? how easy would it be to trace the wires to see if there are any earths that shouldn't be there?
is it worth swapping in another known working motor?
thanks for the comments.

Tracing the wire would be a dsh out job i would think, then you have to undo all the foamy pish the looms are wrapped in and it's 'orrible sticky pish.
Swapping in a known good motor would cure your problem if it's that or eliminate the motor as the problem if it's not

Since it happens when the fan is off, it can only be the ign live feed to the switch, not the loom to the fan. Take out your stereo, and driver side dash undertray and follow the black/red wire from the fan switch as best you can to behind the fusebox. If you find any bare wires tape em up
The fuse for the blower also feeds the glovebox light so check that as best you can, you can see the loom runing to it reasonably well if you take out the dash switch surround.

thanks to you all for your help, im very grateful. hopefully i can solve the problem now.

turned out that the bulb in the golve box light had fallen out due to a broken contact, so as the car moved, it would move around in the housing, causing it to touch both contacts and short the circuit.
this has solved the problem so far, just in case anyone was interested.

Sorry to jump in on this thread(as usual)
Does anyone know a quick fix for stopping the squeaking the fan makes on mk2's?
Both of my mk2's have made this squeek/whirr at low speeds, ive replaced the fan in my newer mk2 and it still does the same thing...
Any ideas?
A:
can try removing it and filling with WD, but this usually doesn't last long. Next time, test it before you buy. I used some jump leads to try out mine on a random car battery on all speeds before I parted wi me hard earned.

Ok.
Good idea really.
I didnt spend any money on the replacement though. It was a 'in the toolbox jobby' from the scrapyard.
I searched through loads of mk2's to find what looked like the best fan got it home to find it was just as bad lol.
