Hi Everyone
I was driving my MK3 8Valver 98' when the car just "Cut Out" I started it again and it fired up again but an hour later especially when I slow down the car will just cut out again and stop. Checked the spark plugs and they are fine, what could this be??..PLEASE HELP!!!!!
A:
i had a similiar problem with mine and it turned out to be a faulty relay. i have 92 8v and it was either relay 30 or 36
A:
what is a relay mate?
Is this something I can replace myself? whats the difference between a 30 and 60?
Many thanks in advance....
A:
could be the ignition switch, with the car running wiggle the key about
A:
does it have a relay for the fuel pump? because that's what used to make the mk1 cut out.
A:
or could need the throttle body cleaning. sometimes helps. Also herd the oil press swiches could be to blame then there is the cam sensor!
A:
Rusty filler pipe?
A:
Hi guys
Thanks for all your help, Got the Throttle body cleaned on saturday and was advised that there was too much oil in the car, whoever had it before filled it too much.
Drove it away and two miles down the road it cut out again, do you think this has something to do with too much oil? should I just get an oil change or drain some of the oil and that would rectify the problem ?
The oil was not taken out on saturday so is slightly over, could this be the main problem?
A:
its unlikely that the oil being slightly over will cause it to cut out, check fuel and ignition relays, plus the engine earth strap. does the battery light come on at all anytime?
A:
No the battery light only comes on when the car is started which is normal then turns off. Thinkng of taking it to authorised VW so they can put it on a computer and analyse what the fault is..
Funny, I have driven it for three days and it has not happened....

Definitely sounds like a ECU (Engine Computer Unit) Relay problem. This would also be the cheapest option to replace before looking at more expensive items like the throttle body etc.
This relay on GOLF GTI MK3 earlier than '96 came with a black relay marked number 30.
Models after 96 generally comes with a white one.
A relay is essentially a magnetic coil with one or more electrical contactors.
When current is passed through the coil, the contact(s) is closed and an electrical circuit is completed. A relay usually makes a distinctive "click" sound and a typical example would be your ignition relay which makes the clicking sound when you turn the ignition on and off...
All relays are located above your fuses in your fusebox and are square little boxes usually about 1" x 1"in size. (Fusebox is located beneath a removable panel underneath your stearing coumn towards the righthand side and has two green release clips that must be depressed to release the cover. You'll need a torch to see the relay number on top of the relay. Take note of it's exact location since it is possible to reinesrt it incorrectly. (You'll know if it is incorrect if you start your engine and it sounds like it is missing a spark plug!)
I hope this give you some insight...
