A&Q about 350Z
Q:
Apologies that my first post is a cry for help - I've read the FAQs, and this seems similar to a problem some people have had, but with a twist.
My new Urinal White MKII GTi has an interesting habit...
With the headlights off, everything's fine. Top car, love it.
Turn the headlights on and it all goes wrong.
The binnacle lights (the ones that light up the instruments, but not the heater controls - the latter are fine) work intermittently, and when they go out, the rev counter stops working too and the main beam tell-tale (the little blue light) goes on when the main beam is off!
Turn on the main beam and the blue tell-tale main beam dash light goes off to be replaced with the oil pressure light (pressure's fine though)! Turn the dash light control (making it brighter and dimmer) and the rev counter starts working again, but not at 100%.
Turning the ignition key to the second postition (before the engine's on) makes the binnacle lights work again. Dunno about the rev counter, 'cos the engine's off at this point.
Oh yeah, and going over a bump tonight restored the dash lights!
Any ideas? This is electricity and therefore a black art as far as I'm concerned. But even being an electrical muppet, it sounds like a loose connection. Anyone more experienced than me (not hard - my first GTi) know what's what?

pop the bonnet and find the dim-dip resistor bolted just below the driver side headlights, its about the size of a packet of polos with a yellow wire coming out each end. Follow the wiring till you find the white plug, disconnect this. If that doesn't help, take out the driver side dash undertray follow the wiring coming out the plugs on the bottom of the dash clocks, see if you can see any loose or damaged wires

Thanks for that - I'll have a go and see what happens. Sounds a bit more scientific than "beat seven bells of **** out of it with a hammer."
Cheers
