Intermittent wipe again

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

On vehicles without the intermittent wipe (ie early Golfs/Roccos) is it possible just to change the stalk and relay to achieve intermittency (new word!) or is it more complicated,
A:

Check my own thread? Thanks for searching tho
The main point is that my rocco doesn't have intermittent wipe, i.e. the stalk only goes up - slow or fast wipe - it doesn't go down to the intermittent position.
So back to original q. Will changing the stalk do the trick?
A:

Aha yes now I know why I was taught to start at the top left and work left to right when reading, now I see what you mean ;)
Sorry I don't know the answer to your actual question, I'll get my coat!
A:

My wiper stalk didn't move down either on my Golf.
Take the steering wheel off, then take the stalks off and there should be a white bit of plastic that stops the stalk being moved down. Bin this bit of plastic and it should give you intermittent.
A:

U have to be kidding me, that really works??
Imagine if VW did the same thing with their engines, every car comes with a GTI engine but with a piece of plastic under the accellerator pedal so you cant go fast

Aha! I REMEMBER! Cheers for that.

Just a quickie, does this mean that the far bottom position is intermittent then off, slow, fast moving up? Mine's never worked and I assumed furthest down was off then intermittent, slow, fast. If I was wrong i might have another go at fixing it
A:

Down for intermittent, up one for off, slow, fast.
And if it is in your Mk3 then when it works, push it down until it wipes the screen then back to off, decide how long you want the pause for (between 1 and 6 seconds) then pull it down again.
It resets it each time you turn the ignition off back to the standard setting (don't know how long it is standard)

Unless the cheapskate first owner didn't specify variable intermittent - then you'll have to buy your own relay!
A:

OMG bloody Germans, you have to spec everything.

Cheers guys, will av a look tonight

Hi all.
Just resurrecting this thread as I've had the steering column apart to try and fix my dodgy horn (the car randomly honking innocent people as you drive along is most stressful!) - and while I was there I spotted and removed the white bit of plastic that restricts the wiper arm movement.
Put it all back together - smugly pulled the wiper arm down... and nothing! haha!
I'm guessing I have a really cheapskate relay without even the intermittent setting?
Is it likely that if I put the variable wiper relay in there, it will just work - or is it possible that the wiring is missing on an 8v 89 GTi...
Cheers!
Tim.
A:

Replace the relay #19, if that doesn't help then chuck another stalk on there. If it still dosen't work, then it's either a wiring fault or a knackered wiper motor.
As said above, invest in a varaible intermittant relay '99', I use mine all the time! (Though only when it is raining )
Edit: If you don't have a '19' relay, then that would suggest its an el-cheapo-non-intermittant one. The front wiper relay on your pre-90 spec wiring MK2 will be in position 10
A:

Cheers RJ,
Yes, it's a number 19 relay, will check the position later. Normal wiper speeds are working perfectly, I was just hoping for a quick mod to gain intermittent! Nothing is ever that simple, but hopefully the '99' relay might do the trick. Next stop wiring though, see if the switch is actually creating a contact on the down position.
A:

yeah if you're going to put another relay in, put a 99 in there
