A&Q about 350Z
Q:
How do chaps,
I'v recently bought P/P head, a 292 deg cam and some twin 40-s dellortos for my mk1 1.8
Cam is tsr fast road item, just wondered if i should keep k-jet once i swap head and a cam or should i bolt carbs to it?
Will this cam be better suited to carbs?
I'm not sure of the lift the cam has
Cheers

Do you know (or can you find out) the timing figures e.g 35/70-70/35 (it wont be that for the duration you have but thats the sort of thing tou need to know). Initially I'd say it would have too much overlap for the K-jet flap to cope with, the pulsing in the inlet tract will cause the flap to... flap and upset the fueling. Carbs it could be then !
You sure it's 292 ? they used to do a 282 that was classed as a fast road cam.
A:
a 282 does sounds like a fast road road cam for a 8v. you will be able to get the fueling set up better on carbs and have better throttle response.
A:
I got it of here in clasifieds, it said its 292 duration
Forgot to mention i have 4 branch as well to go on
Seems like it is going to be carbs
What is a good place to send carbs for a bit of a clean/rebuilt if needed and jeting to suit my engine?
A:
eurocarb are dealers for dellorto, they rebuild/refurbish them too
A:
any conntact details scott?
A:
eurocarb are good but a bit expensive i picked up a few parts for my 45's from there
A:
found them, any others?
A:
i used them for my parts, they rebuilt my carbs too. Like pascal says they are expensive but they do a bloody good job.
A:
thanks for info boys
I'l give them a call tommorow and have a chatt
A:
Maybe worth trying Burlen fuel systems. Mainly an Su dealer but they overhall carbs, worth a phone call. Eurocarb are good.
What size choke's are in the Dellorto's ?
A:
No idea on chocke sizes, dont have the carbs with me yet, what size would be good for my engine set up?

Depending on how goodthe set-up turns out, if yr power is in the 145hp ball park (it should be around there with that combo) then start with a 33mm choke. If below 140 hp then try a 32mm choke as you may pick-up low and midrange power (with better responce) for little or no top end loss. If over 150-ish hp it may need a 34mm choke.
A:
Dont think it would make 145 bhp so i may go with 32mm ones
I'm deffo going for carbs now as mk1 is running like s*it at the mo
It was fine(ish) on the way to oulton park this morning, but just now on the way back it run very badly
It didnt like full throttle at all, it actually slowed down if i opened it fully
Seemed fine on part throttle
i'm convinced it is the fueling that's the problem
Bloo*y crap flap
Cheers for usefull info mr hillclimber

No probs
I had most of the problems you've had many years back when my car was fairly standard. I changed metering heads (twice), warm up regs (twice), fuel pump, tank filler neck plus "god" knows how many fuel filters and at every stage it would run ok for a while then play up again. A friend of mine who used to see a lot of MK1's when they started getting on a bit said (almost at every stage!) "start from the begining, take out the tank, have it cleaned, clean out the lines and replace every thing the fuel runs through !"
Being young, I took the easy option of replacing bits as they played up. After doing everything a couple of times over I took his advice and started from the source of the problem (dirt in the system from a rusty filler neck) and worked forward. Funny, it ran ok after that... even the smug look on my friends face did'nt bother me !
When up and running, find a "good" rolling road man thats happy to swing the cam timing and play with the carb/jetting/choke's till he gets the best from it... though they "do" tend to charge for it !
A:
A little insperation for you !
A:
Well i just had a look at it and found two problems
First is the rubber pipe joining fuel tank to the pump had a kink in it not allowing petrol to flow freely- easy repair(done it)
Second problem is petrol or what ever it is that is reaching my meetering head!
Basically i'v pulled out one injector and run the engine to check the flow and was amazed to see what was squirting out is'nt clean petrol but something resembling tesco cloudy lemonade!
it looks like i'v put in few pints of milk into my tank and mixed it with petrol
It's not water as it is not seperating from petrol
not sure what is going on as i'v filled up at m6 services yesterday on the way to oulton park
by the way fuel tank is new(recently replaced by previous owner along with filler neck
Pics
Looks like i'l haftu empty my fuel tank, might hot wire the pump and undo supply pipe by meetering head and keep pupming out untill it clears or is totaly empty

By the way thanks for inspiration
This is what turned up this morning
A:
i remember when my 45's turned up in the post, what a day!! you must be a happy man

Carbs look ok, you'll get some of yr money back when you sell the Ford inlet manifold !
You'll also need some decent trumpets and some Misab plates (the ally & rubber gasket that fits between the carbs & manifold) plus, if you hav'nt seen one yet, the common 8v manifold will need opening up as the standard ports are very small.
What size chokes are in them ?
You may also need to moddify that linkage as the carbs will sit "much" closer together on a Golf manifold, you may have to cut down the ends of the spindles as well.
A:
Trumpets are on the way, chockes are 32mm sp should be ok
Head and manifold already done so it should be straight fit, still awaiting for it to arrive, purchased on e-bay
FOR SALE PORTED & POLISHED CYLINDAR HEAD & 40mm INLET MANIFOLD
Both Stored for 6 months by myself all look to be in good condition bought but never used fo sale with no reserve.
The cylinder head fits a Mk1, mk2 vw golf 1.6 1.8, 8 valve also fits audi 8v. The head has
Solid Tappet Lifters to run this head you'll need a performance cam to accomodate these. It was previously run using a tsr 103 cam on a standard 1.8 bottom end. Has been Ported & polished to accomodate twin 40mm carbs inlet manifold included in sale and pictured below though each can be sold seperatley if needed. The Head had new springs, valve guides & stem seals fitted 8000 miles ago.
Again cheers for your help mr hillclimber

By the way this is my mk1

Pleasure...
Looks like the head has standard size valves though the ports look a good size going by the size of the ports of the inlet manifold, and Misab's as well... very good. You "may" find that the inlet has been opened up at the manifold face but tapers in the centre which may need opening up, also the end ports may need a little re-shaping to straighten them up a little, though with 40's and smaller valve's/ports it may not be so crucial.
You may get away with it on the 40's but I had to cut down the cup washers to a "D" shape so they'd fit against the carb body on my 48's. Choke size an ideal starting point so thats good.
Try and find out fron the seller how confident he is that the springs fitted are ok for performance cam use.
The Mk1 looks "very" nice... been toying with White for my project "long term" (see members motors), looks good on a MK1.
Pity you cant get it running on the K-jet, any updates on the "milk" ?
Are there any markings (numbers) stamped on the end of the cam that you have ?
A:
Dont have the cam yet, still waiting for a club member to get back to me
If he doesnt, what cam do you think i should go for?
Judging by other thread about cams newman 272 sounds about ok for my application?
got it running now, and it's running really well to be honest, just how it should for a standard car if not a bit better1
"milk" was a mistery, pumped some fuel out and it cleared, been fine since
Cheers
