high millage

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

dear people,
i have just recently bought a m reg golf mk3 2.0 16v ABF but there is one problem? the car has done 158k miles . i had it now for 6-8 months. A mate that works in a local garage said the car is near its time and will go soon with milage like that .
Can any one help me with this car with some pointers to keep it strong and reliable...
many thanks
A:

ive got a couple threads going at the moment about my planned change to 5w-40 synth oil... for my 155k mile 2.0 16v.
what signs of a problem has yours got? at 155k miles, the only signs of probs mine has is rust.. the engine is going to outlast the rest of the car at this pace lol
A:

My 1.4 has done157k till now and she is still pushing hard never gave me any prob, all i have is a leak from the camshaft seals which will be shanged soon..... Just give her regular service and keep an eye on the liquids and she will do another 158k, with good driving. remember its a v dub lool

What a ridiculous thing to say. Cars will go on forever, if you're prepared to pay to replace parts! A car will die at 40k if you never service it, whereas people on here have had mk2 golfs go past the 300k mark because they've been looked after/had money spent on them.
A:

maybe 2.0 golfs die at 158k miles and mine has only got 4000 miles left to live?
A:

hey matt... get the car looked after by a dubber. change the timing belt if it hasn't been done in the past 40k/4 years. give it regular oil changes, and replace any worn parts, e.g. fan belts, bushes, filters...
the engine itself, if its been looked after will last forever... even if it hasn't and has worn seals/pistons/valves, they can still be replaced. It'll just cost more money to get back on the road.

Ignore him, he doesn't know what he's on about.
A:

ive got 181k on an 8v mk2, still shifts, no knocks, taps, smoke or anything, just regular oil changes etc, i wouldnt worry about it
A:

There's a mk3 ABF'd car round the corner from me with 185k on the clock, the owner drives it hard and never services it regularly and it's still going strong.
A:

Give it a service (oil, oil filter, spark plugs, air filter, coolant) and if you really get into it you ould flush the coolant system rather than just topping it up and also change the dizzy cap and ht leads for some nice new items. Could also go the whole hog and change the gear box oil and brake fluid. You can get all that done at a garage for £200 as part of a "gold serivce" (or equivilent), or do it yourself for alot cheaper if your handy/confident enough to takle stuff yourself.
Drive it sensibly (let it come up to temp before booting it) and there is no reason for it to not make 200,000 miles.
You get what you put in.
I would find a new mechanic if I were you too. Everybody knows VW GTI's get better and better with age.

I can attest to that!

Look after it properly and it will look after you

The garage owner probably wants it off you cheap!!

hi people.
thanks for all the replys. my car needs new CV joints each side, one of the spark plugs is holding on with only two threads and i seem not able to jack the car up at the front because its keep on slipping off where it should hold on too.
A:

use a trolley jack then. that solves the last issue.
how are you certain that the CVs are dead? again, thats not really an end of the world issue.
as for the spark plug, whats happened to that? doesnt sound good at all lol
i suppose it depends how much you like the car and wanna keep it?
A:

CV joints going is a common thing once you get over 100,000 miles tbh. I just had to change both the cv gaitors on my car as they were torn.
Change your spark plugs, sounds like they have been over-tightened or are not the correct ones.
Its a gpod idea to have a good trolley jack.

Memzie,
Looked and sounded all right when I saw/heard it breifly at last months meet. If you're planning to come up again at the end of this month we can have a look over it but I'd follow the advice here. If you weren't worried before your friend said anything there probably isn't any problems! And it is a bit of a silly thing to say as some other members have pointed out. Completely depends how you drive and how its looked after. If you've had it for over 6 months with no trouble and looked after it chances are its not about to self destruct!
See ya in a few weeks hopefully!
