Coolant help needed before i go insane

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Hi All
car is a 1.8 driver 91 mk2 with weber carb, i have recently replaced the water pump, water pump housing thermostat and thermostat housing but it keeps leaking when it comes to fill up the coolant.
i have taken it out and tried so many times but its always the same the back of the housing nearest the block leaks, i managed to get it to a steady 1 a sec drip so thought i would take for a drive to open stat but it just got very hot and no water seams to pass through the stat.
I have taken the stat out and reconnected the housing and just filled up to get me to a motorfactors and they said its fine i have tested it in boiling water and nothin.
so my questions are:
Why is it leaking when the stat is in the housing but not when its not?
How safe is it to drive with no stat in?
Any one got any ideas how to get this car up and running again its becoming i nightmare with it constantly having issues.
Cheers in advance
BEn

You can drive with no thermostat in. You will lose the comfor of in car heating and your car may refuse to start in the cold of winter though.
I know you have tested the thermostat in water as your supposed to, but m8 had the same problem with his rado and it was 3 thermostats later, despite all being tested in water before hand an opening, that he got one that worked as it should of when in the car.
Maybe a crack in the thermostat housing of some kind?
A:

i know all about the loss of heat in car it was freezing this morning and had to drive with windows open to try and de mist the screen. will it cause any long term damage no having a stat?
also the housing is brand new its the second one in a week i thought i should replace after all the leaks last week, so i replaced and still have a leak is there a method of puttin it in cos it seams to only leak around the back by the block?
Do people use any liquid gasket or is the rubber ring enough on its own?
A:

I had this same problem a few weeks back after i changed my water pump!!! Its a right ****
What I did was a bit of a bodge job, but just used some of that blue gasket selant, and it hasnt leaked since...
( Better go outside and check now )

cheers mate so you just slapped a load of gasket in there and it was fine?
i gonna have to do something this car is winding me up just want some carefree motoring for a while
A:

Hi All
i retested the stat yesterday in a pan on the stove and it opened up nicely this time, so i thinkit it might have not been hot enough last time, the only trouble is when i fit it back in its gonna leak i just know it, has anyone else had this trouble and have any definitive guide to fitting and re filling the system with no leaks or air locks
A:

With these things its a case of trial and error.
A:

how do you mean trial and error?
is there a best way to refil the system without air locks?
also will it defo be safe to use liquid gasket on the thermo housing?
A:

like I sad buddy, I just slapped some liquid gasket on the plastic housing and done it up, It was really pi**ing me of as mine kept leaking from the back, then try and reseat it, then it would leak from the front.....
Done 500 miles so far and the stat opns and closes fine....

Hi All
Just a quick update,
i left the gasket till sunday till i filled up the system and then took it for a gentile drive in the afternoon, everything was fine and dandy and level stayed fine all day.
woke up this morning looking forward to driving to work for the first time in weeks, so started car and opened bonnet to make sure levels were fine, only to find that the F**k*R has emptied it self and was leaking as the engine was running and stopped when turned off.
It appears that the therm,o stat housing has moved away from the waterpump housing and cant tighten it right up to create a tight seal.
Any ideas what to do as its driving me more and more insane and it is slowly looking like i gonna have to get rid of the golf as i can never drive it or fix it.
Please help

It sounds like your housing is a schneidy one, you said it was new. Where from? shouldn't move at all once bolted up. are the bolt holes stripped?
there shouldn't be enough force in that area to move it at all. if in doubt get an OEM housing and a new stat. Even a 2nd hand OEM is better than some of the tat that people sell as "OEM"
A:

i got the termostat and housing from vwspares.co.uk
so are the vw oem ones better? the bolt holes in the housing are just brass eyes the thread is in the waterpump housing.
What bolts should i be using i got m6x22mm

vwspares
Go to VW or GSF and the parts will do the job propperly for you mate.

are vw spares a waste of time then?
i recently bough, water pump, husing, therm and hosuing oil filter and spark plugs and drive belt, will it all be ok?
i also bought the g60 top mounts and nuts from them and the drivers side seams to have come lose or wrecked as its creaking now. any ideas?
this leak is killing me.
i got it booked in to volksmart in tipton tomorro so hopefully they can sort it out once and for all.
A:

hi
just quick update i have just got the car back from vwsmart in tipton and it cost £20.
they have replaced the housing as they said the other one warped it still doesn't look like the flushes fit but it working at keeping the water in i will just hope that tomorrow morning it is all ok.
Ill update if anything else goes wrong with it,
Just in case anyone is in the westmidlands and needs a honest mechanic try them they are good value and very good at their job

AAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Car last night was fine felt good to drive again
drove to work today parkd up, then lunch time smoke rolled round and saw a puddle under car so moved to dry parking spot and left hood up and then i saw the most devestating drip ever it shattered my love with the golf.
called the garage and gotta drop it off again tomorro any ideas what it could be?
A:

dropped car off the huy changed the clip holding the bottom hose to the thermo housing and had it running and stopped in garage all afternnon (about 3 hours) when i picked it up it was spot on,drove to work the next day and surprise surprise it stared to leak again it is only a few drops and so fr in 3 days has only dropped a few mm but it is still a leak.
the only thing i can think off is that it only happen when i have driven it for a bit so could it be pressure or the vibration moving the bolts, the garage did say they had to nip them up last time.
is this comon or am i using the wrong bolts i was under the impression they are m6x22 is this correct as they dont feel the tightest fit in the water pump housing so i think the vibration could be the problem
any help much appriciated as its driving me mad.
A:

I take it you fitted a new thermostat seal? You could try a metal thermostat housing, MK1s had them. I've not had any bother with items from vwspares, after most of the kit they sell is febi just like what GSF have.
Saying that, I wouldn't buy plastic flanges from anyone apart from VW
My GTI was a sod for leaking here after I put a new stat in, I had the housing off a couple of times and found that the issue was I was using the haynes manual torque figures, which were nowhere near enough! After I nipped the bolts up all was well. If the bolts keep undoing, why not try threadlock, or new bolts from VW?
A:

i thried thread lock the first time but i might try it agai its winding me up so much even though its only a few mm its the principle
