A&Q about 350Z
Q:
my dad has a 1982 mk1 1600 gti k-jet, with 64,000 miles, one owner (him from the factory) it has never been ragged and has been garaged since new and has always ran really well.
A few weeks ago it suddenly began to run really lumpy and smoked alot. It would cut out if the throttle was not kept open when stopped at the lights, and was then almost impossible to restart, only just got it home.
It was warm at the time, but displays the same simptoms from cold, sounds like it has a really high lift cam in it, pumps fuel smelling smoke everywhere and will just conk out if no throttle.
could it be a fuel problem?
seems very strange as it is very well maintained.
any ideas as to what could have caused the problem?
A:
sounds like some sort of prob with the fuelling on k-jet system...over fuelling or something...maybe worth checkin if any vacuum leaks too
A:
On a Mk1 at this time of year there's a high possibility of a crack or hole in the petrol tank filler pipe thats let dirty water in and starts to play havoc with the fuel injection.
Take the back seat base out, the cover off the tank sender, take the sender/lift pump out and look into the tank. Clean petrol is clear and the shiny insides of the tank can easily be seen. If there is dirty water in there the petrol will be cloudy if the car has just ben driven about or pools of water in the base if its been stood for a while
A:
fuel seems fine, and the car never see's any water anyway as it is never driven in the wet, or left outside. i know very little about the problems that k-jets are susceptable to, is this a common one???
A:
Try unplugging the 5th injector and/or the WUR (Do they have one? ) It sounds to me like one of the cold start components has given up the ghost and is running all the time...
A:
what is a WUR? What should be looked for in the 5th injector? to see if it is leaking etc? if one of the cold start components was functioning all of the time, would it not run fine when cold but then get problematic when the engine has warmed up?
A:
wur is mounted on the front of the block near the oil filter housing, and the 5th injector is in the side of the inlet, it has a blue plug IIRC
