running to rich

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

my 16v kr is running on carbs. i swapped it for a PB engine and so it is running on 8v ecu and ignition coil. i runs well for about 10-20 mins then starts to misfire, it failed an mot as it was running to rich. logically i will change it over to 16v ecu and better ignition coil and leads but just wondering if it could be something else? anyone have ideas of how hard the ecu swap would be? im only using igntion but will i have to custom my own wiring? also i have a ported and polished head, will this affect detonation in any way? to much to do not enough knowledge. any help appreciated and will post my swap with info as soon as its worthy
A:

As you say its running rich, the plugs could be fouling up and causing the misfire. When the misfire happens, does the whole car jerk and/or does the rev counter flicker ? or does the engine just feel fluffy ? If its the former its more likely to be electrical, if the later then possibly the rich mixture. Its not a hard and fast rule but may help point in the right direction.
A ported head should'nt really cause detonation unless volumetric efficiency has gone up a fair bit or the head has been skimmed a lot and the c.r has gone up a lot... Check the ignition timing.
Get along to a carb friendly rolling road with an operater who knows his way around DCOE's.

cheers for pointers hill man
its prob too rich as it not that jerky and it tends to just splutter then hit 3500-4000 rpm and slowly work out up the rev range. it was set up by a specialist although he reconmended better ignition coil/leads i wonder if that will affect detnonation? does say a flamethrower coil give out bigger spark therefore using all fuel in chamber or would it be more that the 8v ecu is telling the coil to spark at wrong time?
also does anyone know if i change my ecu to 16v would i need different clocks, does the 8v ecu work on a 16v? would the swap be hassle when it comes to dash wiring?
A:

The e.c.u could be the problem. Dont go mad with expensive coils and ignition components with flashy names, good ol' Bosch components wil do more than a good job.
If its running too rich then you need to reduce the fuel rather than try and burn whats going in.
Did the specialist change any jets or just adjust the idle mixture and balance the carbs ?
A:

he changed the jets, adjusted idel and balanced the carbs. i reckon after reading othewr threads that he screwed it up. from what other people have calimed my cars way below stats. i did full engine rebuild, arp rod bolts for no reason other than future possibilties!!, lightened balanced components, ported polished head, full magnex ie no cat, lightened flywheel and the figures came out at best 129bhp and 121lbft. Im not working on my car to get the biggest in the world but with twin 45 DHLA it doesnt seem big enough.
after all this i think i need to change my ecu and go to a decent specialist in dellortos. got any suggestions in portsmouth or swindon area?
also anyone know of any other wiring i need to do to a 16v on carbs. i got fuel pump, water temp senders, oil temp senders is that it?
A:

ow yer i also used a kr exhaust cam with the end loped of and the timing cog advanced 5 degrees. any views on this people?
yes
no
maybe
wack

Is that flywheel or wheel hp ? What size chokes in the carbs ? Is it still an 1800 ? Is that a manifold & system or just the system with the original manifold ?
A:

its wheel hp. Im pretty sure its running 38 maybe 36 chokes. it is still an 1800 and the exhaust system is a complete system new manifold the lot. Thats why im slightly miffed, after reading other peoples stats it does seem low
i think new loom is definetely in order, aswell as coil and leads as they are both old and tatty. Then get carbs set up well by specialist and i should see some power gains.
any comments mr hill climber, what you driving or does the name tell the story
A:

The only "old school" type rolling road tuners close to portsmouth I can think of would be in the Dorset area....

Non are VW specialists as such but should know their way around a pair of sidedraughts, especially the first two.
Or an exellent job could be had here if yr prepaired to travel... Track 'N' Road performance 01708 869189 or
A:

you might need 34mm chokes, 38 could be to big for a 1800 using 45's
mr hillclimber, who would you recomend in the glos area, i used race shack in tewkesbury last time i had mine set up
A:

ill try them in future and let you know what happens. thanks again
