ghost in the machine

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

for a few months now my mk4 GTi has been running like sh*t. im starting to go slightly mad with the endless problems which i believe to b electrical rather than mechanical. im convinced its the ecu thats had it but my mate insists its the neuspeed induction kit thats on it....??? i cant believe that all my engine problems are down to this, but the engine did start to play up after i fitted it...hmm.doesnt make sence, anyone had similar problems?
im taking it to VW next week with the kit on. i just know they will say that this will affect the engine but surely it cant be that simple?just because its drawing in more air cant mean the engine will loose power and idle badly.surely.any advice much appreciated.
A:

What exactly is the syptoms of the bad running?
A:

well....ive had the car into my VAG mechanics FOUR times.they have now said "we cant understand the faults" and have effectively given up on it.which is nice. in the end ive spent around £500 and the problems still exist. ive had a new recirculation valve fitted, a new dump valve, a new temprature pressure sensor, and various other turbo parts including turbo valves. had a lot of work done to the engine last time, car ran fine for 10 days then it stared loosing power, idleing badly and is generally a mess. took it back and 4 completly alien and nnew fault codes are now showing up. im convinced the ecu has gone mad and needs replacing, i take it to vw next week.so, same symtoms (loss of power, idle) but now with different fault codes. does this sound like the ecu has gone?i really cant think of anything else and have even considered seling the car, which i really dont want to do.im lost. heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp!
A:

I dont know too much about anything really
But fear not im sure somebody will be able to help!
A:

Very odd that it developed 4 new faults after being looked at last time so I can see why youd be tempted to look at the ECU. What were the fault codes that were coming up out of interest?
A:

have you tried puttin the standard airbox back on and seeing if it runs any better?
I know it might not seem like this could be the problem but sometimes its the small obvious things that are the route of all evil
A:

Oiled air filters can ruin the MAF sensor, not sure if that's the case with the Neuspeed tho...
A:

cheers for advice folks.after much frustration and swearing i managed to cram the old airbox back in. ive been so against this for so long as i cant understand how neuspeed (or awesomeGTI) could sell products that would actually reduce the performance and running of the car.anyway, ive decided to give it a try. car runs perfectly at the moment but im just waiting for the loss of power ive been experiencing the past few months. i live in hope. otherwise im lookin at a new ecu i think.
oh and if it was just the induction kit, it looks like ive spent £500 on nothing but ecu readings and having every pipe and part of the engine physically checked out. i feel a nervous break down coming on...
A:

hey sorry to keep goin on bout this. last post , promise. car was tuned at star performance in fife. found this quote on the site about induction...."Also, some engines such as the 20V 1.8T engine, which is widely used in VW Group vehicles, cannot use heavily oiled filters as this oil can ruin the air/mass flow meter which is located on the inductive inlet."
think awesomeGTI have some explaining to do .....
