A&Q about 350Z
Q:
anyone know where i will be able to get a magnetic sump and gearbox plug for my vr6
cheers
A:
I just epoxy a wee magnet onto the end of the existing plug.......
A:
not much use in the engine.
A:
why not???
A:
not a very high proportion of the contaminants in the oil are magnetic.
A:
i got one of ebay a few months back, fitted it yesterday... very strong magnet - time will tell
A:
cool, did you get it from a shop on ebay or secondhand??
Cheers

It gives you an idea, at least...... that's why a lot of cars come with them as std.......
A:
they use the same priciple for specro analysis on aircraft engines, magnets in various oil gallries direct from the bearings.. this check for bearing wear so as not to have engine failure in flight.... (sad piece of info)
and i bought the plug froma shop on ebay, not much more than £4 iirc..... however it did come via post from japan!!!
A:
cool, can you remember the sellers ebay name
cheers

Metal shards/shavings aren't metalic now are they?
A:
As your bearings are made from aluminium bronze or tin lead and your pistons are made from aluminium, a device that only detects ferrous metals is always going to be limited as a diagnostic tool. Caterpillar did some research on this and found the most damaging contaminents were carbon particles below 2 microns in size which are almost as hard as diamond. Your oil filter doesn't work below 10 microns. The only thing that works is bypass oil filtering. There's plenty of info on the web.

Ok I see, it's an indicator, rather than a protection device..
A:
Aye, especially if you start to hear a suspicious rattle or knock........ , but it also gives you a bit of peace of mind every time you change the oil and there is bugger all on it.......
A:
well this was the plan but getting hold of one is like rocking horse poo lol, thought about sticking one to the end of my sump plug now but am worried about the fact the oil will br around 100 degrees i dont think it will hold
A:
There'll be plugs from other makes that have the same thread and seat.

It does hold - and even if it didn't, it would stick to the bottom of the sump and stay there.......

Unless it's a newer VAG with an alloy sump, then it would stick to the crank
