A&Q about 350Z
Q:
Guys, recently wrote off my mk2 16v 2L, and needed a quick replacement car so I could continue to get to work, so I bought a cheap Audi Coupe 2.0 8v, I assume this is the same engine they fitted to the mk3 golf gti???
my question, If I take out the cam and replace it with the mk2 gti golf cam, and destroy the internals of the Catalytic converter (sensibly**) will it increse the flow/power/torque of the engine?
At the moment it seems really restrictive.
I also have a mk2 golf gti 8v with a vento 2.0L engine but with the mk2 head and cam ect. and it goes like sh*t off a shovel?
will this change of cam, and modifying the cat have a similar effect?
thanks.....
A:
the engine in the audi may be a bubble block (3a ????) so isnt the same as the mk3 it depends on the year of the audi. early audi's had the bubble block the later ones had a tall block (2e or AGG)
i think that the cam was one of the main changes when the fitted the cats to cars. I would remove the cat if you can legally.
A:
Aye, the 3A cam is soft as anything........ only good as a paperweight! Stick a Gti one in....
A:
What about the cat?? bash the sh*t out of it? I have a spare if I need it for the MOT?
anything else I can do with it? its a 92K plate, and running EFI with no CO adjustment, guess the sensor infront of the cat takes car of that?
A:
I always thought that you only needed a cat from 93 onwards???
my old 1993 non vw *cough cough* used to pass emissions tests with a decat pipe on it!! only just though!!!

Agreeded 3A cam indentical to PB one. Try an EV one. Emissions will go up though.
A:
Its engine code is ABK not 3a, what cam will this have in it?
and I thought the cam out of the pb (8v mk2gti) was the cam of choice?
A:
i thought that an EV cam gave less go than a PB cam
A:
Isn't the EV a MK2 8v K-Jet lump? If so normally they'll have solid lifters? Or am I getting totally mixed up
A:
The 3A cam is a good bit softer than the PB cam, I have one sitting on the fridge in my garage and the difference in profile is easily visible even to the naked eye.......

Yes the EV is a K-Jet 8v engine. The really early EV's had solid lifters but that changed around 1985 ish when the hydraulic lifters were introduced. I used to have a hydraulic head on my old C plate GTI 8v and it used to tick like crazy! Still it went well though
A:
Cool, glad I havent gon emad
Someone mentioned that the solid lifter cams are a bit wilder than the hydro ones, no idea if thats true or not...

The valve timing specifications for 3A,DZ PB and PF engines at 1mm valve lift, are;
IN opens 3* ATDC
IN closes 43* ABDC
EX opens 37* BBDC
EX closes 3* ATDC
EV cam spec at 1mm valve lift
IN opens 2* BTDC
IN closes 45* ABDC
EX opens 45* BBDC
EX closes 8* BTDC

I dont have the lift specs for these cams but I can confirm later from the part #s if the
3A/PB cams are different.
I too had the same question and did back to back tests on my 3A engined mk2 with 3A head, ADY /2E inlet manifold and Digifant. By swapping between 3A cams and PB cams and it made no difference to performance. The engine even pinked the same place with the digi system. The sprint to 60mph is still a rubbish 7.8 secs before and after. I have not tried an EV cam in this engine yet but when I had an 86 GTi 8v with this CIS motor with a 16v WUR I managed to get it to 60mph in 7.44 secs and the flatness at 5500 was shifted to 6000ish. When the car is megasquirted I will try the EV cam as I will be able to get more data such as vaccum at idle, if the calibration changes etc.

It appears Toyotec is correct, the part number for the PB cam and the Audi 3a cam is the same: 026 109 101 G.
A:
Mine must have been fitted with a bollox cam from another car at some stage, then....... there's feck all "peak" on the nose of the lobe, and it's not due to wear.......
A:
Maybe its off an SPI motor?
A:
Could be,I haven't a clue - but it is most definitely a "nonce" cam!

Would that be the beer fridge in the garage, or the kebabs and pizza fridge?
A:
Makes sense I guess... the EV has 38mm Inlet Valves (I think) so may well have had a slightly lumpier cam to make the same power.
Is the EV cam common to anything else, or just Mk2 8v's from 85(?) to 87(?). Did Roccos or Cabrios get them?
or 1.8 audis??
